Daring Daylight Heist: Rolex Worth Over $83,000 Snatched in Hong Kong
Hong Kong’s bustling Tsim Sha Tsui district, renowned globally for its high-end retail, was the scene of a brazen daylight robbery this past Sunday. A valuable Rolex watch, estimated to be worth a staggering HK$650,000 (approximately US$83,380), was stolen from a luxury jewellery store, leaving authorities on a city-wide manhunt.
The incident unfolded at Prince Jewellery & Watch, a prominent establishment located on Haiphong Road. According to preliminary reports, a man entered the store and expressed interest in examining a specific Rolex timepiece. In a swift and audacious move, the suspect, moments after being handed the watch for inspection, grabbed the luxury item and made a rapid escape.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the perpetrator fled the scene with considerable urgency, heading directly towards Exit C of the MTR Tsim Sha Tsui Station. This strategic escape route indicates a potential pre-planned getaway, aiming to quickly blend into the city’s extensive public transportation network. Store staff, in a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to apprehend the thief, pursued him but quickly lost sight of the suspect. Following the failed pursuit, the store immediately alerted the Hong Kong Police.
Law enforcement officers were dispatched to the location shortly after receiving the report at approximately 12:45 p.m. A thorough search of the immediate vicinity and surrounding areas was conducted, but the suspect managed to evade capture.
Suspect Description and Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have released a description of the individual they are seeking in connection with the high-value theft. The suspect is described as a man believed to be in his 40s, with origins from mainland China. At the time of the incident, he was reportedly wearing:
- A black top
- Dark-colored trousers
- A white face mask (a common accessory in Hong Kong in recent years)
- He was also observed carrying a light-colored backpack, which may have been used to conceal the stolen watch.
The swiftness of the theft and the suspect’s apparent knowledge of escape routes highlight the challenges faced by law enforcement in high-density urban environments. The investigation is ongoing, with police reviewing CCTV footage from the store and surrounding areas, as well as appealing to the public for any information that could assist in identifying and locating the suspect. The theft of such a high-value item from a reputable luxury retailer underscores the persistent threat of opportunistic crime, even in sophisticated and well-policed districts. The value of the stolen Rolex not only represents a significant financial loss for the store but also adds to the ongoing concerns regarding luxury goods theft in the region.
