Wayne Rooney, Manchester United’s legendary former striker, has thrown his weight behind interim manager Michael Carrick, advocating for him to be considered for the permanent top job at Old Trafford. Rooney, who shares a deep history with the club and Carrick as a former teammate, believes the current caretaker possesses the unique blend of a calming presence and an intimate understanding of Manchester United’s intricate workings – qualities he feels are essential for bringing much-needed stability to the team.
Carrick assumed the interim manager role in early January, stepping into the hot seat following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim. Rooney, United’s all-time leading goalscorer, is convinced that Carrick could be the very figure to finally steer the club towards a period of sustained success and composure.
Rooney’s Rationale for Carrick
Speaking on the popular platform, The Overlap, Rooney articulated his perspective: “We’ve been there and tried different managers – (Jose) Mourinho, (Louis) van Gaal, (Erik) ten Hag and (Ruben) Amorim – and for me Carrick makes sense.”
He elaborated on his reasoning, emphasising that his endorsement isn’t simply based on a personal friendship forged during their playing days. “Not because we’ve played together and we’re friends, but because he is a real calming influence,” Rooney stated.

“Having someone there who knows the club and cares for the club makes a big difference,” he continued. “Michael is managing the whole squad and managing them well.”
Carrick’s Impressive Early Impact
Carrick’s stint as interim manager got off to a flying start, marked by an impressive 2-0 victory over fierce rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford. This was swiftly followed by a thrilling 3-2 triumph against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. His early tenure has been nothing short of remarkable, boasting four wins and a single draw in his opening five fixtures. This strong performance has seen Manchester United ascend into the Premier League’s coveted top four positions.
Rooney was keen to highlight Carrick’s influence extending beyond the players who consistently feature in the starting eleven. “The players who are starting, they’re fine you don’t have to manage them,” Rooney observed. “But the other lads – we’ve seen the impact on (Matheus) Cunha, (Benjamin) Sesko, (Harry) Maguire, (Lisandro) Martinez. He’s having an impact on the whole squad and football club.”
A Plea for Internal Talent
The former United captain concluded his assessment with a broader point about the club’s tendency to overlook internal talent in favour of external appointments. He expressed a sentiment that many fans have echoed: “Sometimes we’re quick to overlook what’s right there in front of you and say we’ve got this manager from Turkey or from Spain, who is going to come in and do this, when they have no interest in the football club.”
Rooney believes that appointing Carrick would provide a solid foundation for the club’s future development. “At least (with Carrick) this will give the foundations for the club to keep building, when in two or three years’ time the infrastructure will be back at the club.” His endorsement suggests a belief that nurturing existing club knowledge and loyalty could be the key to rebuilding Manchester United from the ground up.
