Sydney Roosters Target Origin Stars to Strengthen Squad
The Sydney Roosters are reportedly making moves to bolster their squad as they prepare for the future. With key players like Mark Nawaqanitawase and Angus Crichton set to leave for rugby, the club is looking to bring in high-profile talent from other teams.
Potential Targets: Liam Martin and Murray Taulagi
One of the names on the Roosters’ radar is Liam Martin, a forward who has been a consistent performer for the Penrith Panthers. Martin’s contract with the Panthers will run until the end of 2027, but financial pressures at the club could create an opportunity for the Roosters to make a move.
Martin has been a key player for both the NSW Blues and the Kangaroos, and his availability could be crucial. He is currently free to negotiate with other clubs starting in November unless he extends his contract with the Panthers. However, the Panthers may struggle to match the offers from wealthier rivals such as the Roosters, the Perth Bears, and the PNG Chiefs, who are set to join the NRL in 2028.
There have been reports that Martin is open to the idea of moving to PNG, with his teammate Mitch Kenny reportedly close to signing with the Chiefs. Meanwhile, the Roosters are also interested in luring Martin to Bondi, given the increased salary cap space created by the departures of Nawaqanitawase and Crichton.
Looking Beyond Martin: The Case for Murray Taulagi
In addition to Martin, the Roosters have also been linked with Murray Taulagi, a winger from the North Queensland Cowboys. Taulagi is currently without a new contract at the Cowboys and has yet to receive an offer for the upcoming season. Despite this, he has started the season strongly, scoring six tries in five games.
The Cowboys seem to be taking their time with contract negotiations, pushing them back to next month. This could present an opportunity for the Roosters to make a move for Taulagi, who would be a valuable addition to their squad.
Taulagi has played eight games for the Maroons and was part of their 2024 Origin series victory. However, an injury kept him out of Game 1 last year, and he was not selected for the remainder of the series. His experience and skill set could provide the Roosters with another option in their backline.

Building a Stronger Forward Pack
While the Roosters are targeting forwards like Martin and Taulagi, they are also looking to strengthen their forward pack. Siua Wong has reportedly re-signed with the club, although the deal has not been officially confirmed. Robinson is keen to add more depth to the forward line, and Martin would be a strong candidate due to his hard work and tackling ability.
Additionally, the Roosters have already made some off-season additions, including Tommy Talau and Cody Ramsey. Reuben Garrick is also set to join from Manly next year, further enhancing the team’s outside backs.
With the potential departures of veteran players like Daniel Tupou and James Tedesco, the Roosters could have significant financial flexibility to invest in new talent. This could lead to a major overhaul of the squad in the coming seasons.
A New Era for the Roosters
As the Roosters look to build a stronger team, their focus on acquiring experienced players from other teams highlights their ambition. By targeting stars like Martin and Taulagi, the club aims to maintain its competitive edge and continue its success in the NRL.
With the right additions, the Roosters could be well-positioned to challenge for titles in the years ahead. The coming months will be crucial as the club continues its pursuit of top talent and prepares for the challenges of the next season.
