Rory McIlroy hints at daughter Poppy’s golf future

Rory McIlroy Shares Insights on His Daughter’s Potential in Golf

Rory McIlroy, the Northern Irish golfer, has shared some fascinating insights into his daughter Poppy’s growing interest in the sport. The six-time major winner recently clinched his second green jacket at the Masters, marking a significant milestone in his career. This achievement made him the first player since Tiger Woods in 2002 to win back-to-back at Augusta National.

McIlroy revealed that his five-year-old daughter, Poppy, who he shares with his wife Erica Stoll, is already showing a keen interest in golf. While he emphasized that he would not push her into a professional career, he expressed full support if she ever decided to pursue it.

“I would say that is up to her,” McIlroy said during an appearance at the Laureus World Sports Awards. “If that’s what she wants to do, I would be 100 percent behind her and support her. But if that’s not what she wants to do, I am happy to support her in whatever she wants.”

He added that he enjoys the time they spend together on the golf course and hopes that this shared interest could lead to something bigger. However, he remains open to whatever path Poppy chooses.

A Special Bond on the Course

McIlroy’s connection with Poppy goes beyond just playing golf. During the par-three contest before last year’s tournament, the world No 2 allowed his daughter to take on a challenging 25-foot putt on the ninth hole. She successfully sank the shot, which drew enthusiastic cheers from the crowd.

Four days later, it was McIlroy who stole the spotlight as he claimed his second green jacket. The victory marked the culmination of a long journey, as he finally completed his career Grand Slam after 11 years of trying.

Reflecting on his recent win, McIlroy noted that it felt more real and complete compared to his previous victory. He mentioned the importance of having his family by his side, including his parents, wife, and Poppy.

“This year’s win compared to last year’s, it felt more real, more complete,” McIlroy said. “I had my parents there, it wasn’t the first time doing it. When I won in 2025, I kept thinking to myself, ‘is this real life?’ The way it happened, and there was this outpouring of emotion.”

The Power of Golf in Family Bonds

McIlroy also highlighted how golf serves as a bridge between generations. He pointed out that the sport can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from three to 83 years old. This unique aspect allows for meaningful shared experiences between grandparents and grandchildren or even between fathers and their children.

“The great thing about golf is you can play it when you’re three years old and you can play when you are 83 years old,” he said. “It’s amazing that grandparents can play with grandkids or I can go out and play with my daughter Poppy. The age range for golf is so wide that you can create these shared experiences.”

He further explained that unlike some other sports, golf allows players of different skill levels to enjoy the game together. Whether playing off different sets of tees or simply enjoying the course, both participants can have an amazing time.
