Rwanda Stages Strong Comeback to Overcome Italy
Rwanda made a powerful return to the field, successfully avenging their earlier loss to Italy in the ICC Women’s Challenge Trophy. In a thrilling Matchday 7 encounter, the hosts secured a six-wicket victory, showcasing their determination and resilience. This win marked a significant turnaround for Rwanda, who had previously fallen to Italy by 16 runs using the DLS method in their opening match.
Italy won the toss and chose to bat first, but they struggled to find their rhythm early on. The team lost Methnara Rathnayake and Himanshi Akarsha Daluwatta within the second over, setting a challenging tone for their innings. However, Ilenia Sims and Alexia Kontopirakis stepped up with a crucial partnership that helped stabilize the innings. Sims was the standout performer, scoring 37 off 39 balls, including four fours and a six. Kontopirakis contributed 32 off 38 deliveries, helping Italy post a total of 123/7 in their 20 overs.
Chasing a target of 124 runs, Rwanda got off to a strong start with Fanny Utagushimaninde and Gisele Ishimwe leading the charge. Utagushimaninde delivered an impressive performance, scoring 36 off 30 balls, hitting three fours and a six, and earning the Player of the Match award. Ishimwe added 17 runs as Rwanda reached the 50-run mark inside nine overs. Despite losing both openers quickly, Merveille Uwase maintained the momentum with a steady 21 off 19 balls, guiding Rwanda to a comfortable 126/4 and securing a six-wicket win. This victory marked Rwanda’s fourth win in six matches, keeping them in second place on the table with two matches remaining, including a crucial clash against Nepal on Tuesday.
USA Dominates Vanuatu in Commanding Victory
The United States continued their strong performance in the tournament with a dominant 72-run victory over Vanuatu at The Gahanga Main Oval. After choosing to bat first, the USA capitalized on Vanuatu’s fielding errors, starting their innings with a solid foundation. Chetna Reddy Pagydyala and Isani Vaghela formed a formidable partnership, scoring a remarkable 104 runs together. Pagydyala scored an impressive 54 off 48 balls, including seven fours, while Vaghela played a key role with an aggressive 54 off 41 deliveries. Their efforts helped the USA set a commanding total of 162/4 in 20 overs.
Vanuatu struggled to keep up with the required run rate in their chase. Valenta Langiatu was the only player to provide some resistance, scoring 25 off 21 balls before being dismissed in the seventh over. However, the lack of support from the rest of the lineup saw Vanuatu finish at 90/8, allowing the USA a comfortable 72-run victory. With five wins from six matches, the Americans remain at the top of the standings in Kigali.
