The Handshake Controversy in the Asia Cup 2025
Pakistan’s captain, Salman Ali Agha, has recently spoken out about the ongoing debate surrounding the handshake incident that occurred during the Asia Cup 2025. This controversy brings back memories of a similar situation from last year’s tournament, when Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav chose not to participate in the traditional pre-match handshake with his Pakistani counterpart. Many saw this as a symbolic gesture of support for the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people.
The tournament took place in an atmosphere filled with tension, especially after Operation Sindoor, which added to the already heightened political and emotional climate between the two nations. As a result, the decision to skip the handshake carried significant weight and extended beyond just the toss of the coin.
India’s players also avoided post-match handshakes in all three matches against Pakistan, including the final. Despite this, on the field, India demonstrated their strength, winning each of those encounters.
A Glimpse into the Past
Agha reflected on the events leading up to the tournament, mentioning that a press conference had taken place where a handshake did occur. Additionally, during the trophy photoshoot, both teams exchanged handshakes. However, when it came time for the toss, things took an unexpected turn.
“I went for the toss with my media manager, Naim Bhai. The match referee – I don’t recall his name – took me aside and told me, ‘They are going to do this; there won’t be a handshake, so please keep that in mind’. I replied, ‘If there’s no handshake, then so be it’. It’s not like I was desperate to shake hands. So that’s how it happened; he told me beforehand that there would be no handshake,” Agha shared on the ARY podcast.
He had anticipated that the event would proceed normally, but he was surprised when the customary handshake was overlooked at the toss. Agha emphasized that he had been informed beforehand about the decision regarding the toss and accepted it without making a fuss.
The Importance of Role Models
Agha highlighted the importance of setting a good example, noting that such gestures matter because players are often seen as role models by younger fans. He expressed his belief that actions taken on the field can have a lasting impact, even in local club games.
“I’ve said this many times I don’t think this is the right thing to do. When we represent a nation—and I play for Pakistan—people watch me. Children will pick up on this, and if it happens in a club game the next day, it will be because of me in some way, as I’m a part of it. When you are a role model, I believe doing these things is important,” Agha concluded.
