Samson: Indian Players Envied Abhishek Sharma

Sanju Samson, India’s dynamic opening batsman, has lauded his partner, Abhishek Sharma, for their seamless and effective collaboration at the crease. Samson described their partnership as “fire and fire,” a testament to their aggressive approach where they interchangeably take charge of the attack. He further elaborated on the organic connection they share, attributing it to a blend of their distinct backgrounds – Samson’s Kerala roots and Sharma’s Punjabi heritage – which fosters a deep understanding.

Samson expressed admiration for Sharma’s courage and calm demeanor under pressure, highlighting that their camaraderie extends beyond the cricket field, enriching their on-field synergy.

“We’re not a combination of ice and fire; we’re truly fire and fire,” Samson explained during a recent interview. “There are times when he takes the lead, and other times when I do. That’s the kind of dynamic we have. We’ve been building this since 2024. We have this unique Kerala-Punjabi friendship that just clicks. Everything feels incredibly natural, so we don’t overthink it. He’ll ask me about the ball’s trajectory, and I’ll simply tell him it’s coming well and to hit it for a six. It’s that straightforward with him. Abhishek is incredibly brave and composed. I really appreciate his character. I genuinely love our partnership, both on and off the field.”

Samson also humorously recalled a time when the Indian team members felt a touch of envy towards Abhishek Sharma due to his early popularity and the fervent cheers he often received.

“In the past, the other guys would get a little jealous because of the massive cheers Abhishek would get,” Samson admitted. “It was always ‘Abhishek, Abhishek’ everywhere. We’d find ourselves wondering if people were only seeing him. But yes, he’s undoubtedly a superstar in the team now. He should get married soon, bhai!”

The formidable opening duo of Samson and Abhishek Sharma proved to be a destructive force against New Zealand’s bowlers in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final. They forged an impressive 98-run opening partnership, providing India with a blistering start during the powerplay overs. This explosive beginning was instrumental in India amassing a formidable total of 255 in the championship match.

India etched their name in history by clinching a record third T20 World Cup title. They also became the first team to successfully defend their title and secure victory on home soil, following a dominant 96-run triumph over New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Samson’s performance in the T20 World Cup marked a significant resurgence. He overcame periods of inconsistency and time spent on the sidelines to emerge as India’s leading run-scorer in the tournament. His crucial contributions included a series of half-centuries, starting from the virtual quarterfinal against the West Indies all the way to the final showdown against New Zealand.

Throughout the tournament, Samson amassed an impressive 321 runs across five innings, maintaining an outstanding average of 80.25 and a blistering strike rate of 199.37. His innings were studded with 27 fours and 24 sixes, positioning him as the third-highest run-scorer in the T20 World Cup.
