Sanju Samson Clarifies Captaincy Rumors
Sanju Samson has finally addressed the ongoing rumors about the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captaincy, stating that he never considered replacing Ruturaj Gaikwad after his transfer to the franchise for IPL 2026. The discussion came up as CSK entered the tournament with high expectations following Samson’s acquisition from Rajasthan Royals in an Rs. 18 crore deal.
There was a lot of speculation about whether Samson would take over the captaincy, given his previous experience leading Rajasthan Royals. However, the franchise opted to retain Gaikwad as their captain, and Samson has now confirmed that the rumors about a potential leadership change were unfounded.
During a recent episode of the Chennai Super Kings podcast, Samson spoke alongside former Indian opener Abhinav Mukund. He emphasized that he did not arrive at the franchise with any demands or aspirations for the captaincy.
Samson said:
“No. (did the thought of being the CSK captain enter his mind). I had a team already. I had a place already. I wanted to leave that place and join some other place. So you cannot have demands in that transaction.”
He added:
“To be honest, you are trying to enter in a new home. So you don’t go and ask in a new home with some demands, if I have learned anything in my life honestly.”
Support for Ruturaj Gaikwad
Samson has also expressed his full support for Gaikwad’s captaincy, calling him one of the calmest and most confident cricketers in Indian cricket. Gaikwad played a crucial role in convincing Samson to move to Chennai.
Samson remarked:
“Rutu is honestly a very nice, a very different type of Indian cricketing superstar. He is a superstar. He is leading one of the biggest franchises but he is not one of the usual superstar types of people. Maybe he may not sound or behave like he is one of the most confident guys but for me he is the most assured and confident cricketer within Indian cricketing circle.”
He further explained that Gaikwad’s actions inspired him more than his words.
Samson concluded:
“So he suddenly invited me to play for his side. He is a kind of guy with tremendous amount of confidence to take up a move like this and do something like this. So that is the kind of action which appeals to me now. These days most of people talk that this is my move and this is going to be my move, but at the end of the day, the actions are greater than the words.”
Gaikwad’s Leadership Challenges
Gaikwad became the captain of CSK in the 2024 season of the IPL but failed to lead the team beyond the playoffs stage. In the 2025 season, the team faced several challenges due to injuries, making it a difficult year for both the players and the captain.
Despite these challenges, Samson has been performing exceptionally well in the 2026 season. He has scored 402 runs in 10 innings with an average of 57.43 and a strike rate of 167.50. This includes two centuries and one half-century, showcasing his consistent form and contribution to the team.
