Sarr’s Extra-Time Stunner Seals Fiorentina Quarter-Final Berth for Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace has secured a spot in the Conference League quarter-finals after a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over nine-man AEK Larnaca. Ismaila Sarr was the hero of the night, netting a decisive goal in the ninth minute of added time to seal the aggregate win and set up a clash with Italian giants Fiorentina.
The Eagles displayed a more attacking intent from the outset at the Cypriot side’s home ground, a stark contrast to their subdued performance in the first leg at Selhurst Park. Sarr opened the scoring in the 13th minute, signalling Palace’s intent to control the tie.

However, the hosts fought back. Enric Saborit equalised in the 63rd minute with a powerful header from a corner. His contribution, while bringing Larnaca level, ultimately proved costly as he was later sent off for a foul on Sarr, leaving his team at a numerical disadvantage.
The tension was palpable as the match headed into extra time. Sarr, who had already proven to be a constant threat, finally broke the deadlock from a Crystal Palace corner in the ninth minute of the first period of added time. He came agonisingly close to completing a hat-trick, striking the crossbar twice before the final whistle.
Larnaca’s already difficult task was made even harder when Petros Ioannou was dismissed for a dangerous challenge on substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta. This marked the second red card for the Cypriot side, leaving them to finish the match with only nine players. Mateta’s introduction alongside January record signing Jorgen Strand Larsen was a significant moment, as the pair appeared together for the first time in a Palace shirt.
Key Moments and Performances
- Ismaila Sarr’s Brilliance: The Senegal international was the undisputed star of the match. His two goals showcased his pace, finishing ability, and crucial impact in high-pressure moments.
- Walter Benitez’s Return: Goalkeeper Walter Benitez was back in the Palace goal, with captain Dean Henderson still sidelined due to illness. Benitez made several key saves throughout the match to keep Palace in contention.
- Jorgen Strand Larsen’s Contribution: The new signing played a role in Sarr’s opening goal, demonstrating his strength and ability to retain possession under pressure before setting up Adam Wharton.
- Adam Wharton’s Vision: Wharton’s excellent vision and precise pass, which took a slight deflection, were instrumental in creating Sarr’s first goal.
- Defensive Lapses and Resilience: Crystal Palace showed moments of defensive vulnerability, particularly in the lead-up to Larnaca’s equaliser. However, the team also demonstrated resilience, with goalkeeper Alomerovic making crucial saves to deny Palace further goals before the red cards.
The Match Unfolds
Sarr’s opener in the 13th minute was a testament to good build-up play. Jorgen Strand Larsen battled effectively to keep the ball alive before flicking it to Adam Wharton. Wharton then delivered an excellent pass, which deflected kindly into Sarr’s path. The Senegal international rounded goalkeeper Zlatan Alomerovic before calmly slotting the ball home.
Larnaca had their chances in the first half. Captain Angel Garcia’s header on the half-hour mark was directed straight at Benitez. Alomerovic was also busy at the other end, saving a Maxence Lacroix header just before the break to prevent Palace from extending their lead.
The equaliser came from a well-taken Marcus Rohden corner. Palace’s defence failed to deal with the delivery effectively, allowing Enric Saborit to advance and power a header into the net, leaving Benitez with no chance.
Following the equaliser, Crystal Palace rediscovered their composure. Alomerovic was forced into a double save, denying both Wharton and Munoz.
The turning point arrived with 17 minutes remaining in normal time when Saborit, who had already been cautioned, was shown a straight red card for his foul on Sarr.
Manager Oliver Glasner bolstered Palace’s attacking options by bringing on Jean-Philippe Mateta with seven minutes left in regulation time. Despite the increased pressure, the score remained level, with Alomerovic making a vital save from a late Yeremy Pino corner.
Palace eventually regained the lead from a corner. Wharton played it short to Daichi Kamada, who delivered a low cross for Sarr to sweep home.
The closing stages of the match were chaotic. VAR intervened to overturn a penalty decision awarded to Larnaca, correctly ruling that a handball claim against Mateta was incorrect, with replays showing the ball had struck his thigh.
Mateta was then fouled by Ioannou, leading to another VAR review and the subsequent red card for the Larnaca player.
In the dying moments, Sarr had a golden opportunity to seal his hat-trick and the victory when Alomerovic ventured forward for a late set-piece. However, Sarr’s shot struck the upright of the empty goal, leaving the final score at 2-1. Despite the late drama, Crystal Palace had done enough to advance to the next round of the competition.
