Shaun Ryder’s Wild Encounters: From Rogue Orangutans to Celebrity Stardom
Shaun Ryder, the inimitable frontman of Happy Mondays, has never been one to shy away from a wild tale. While his life has been punctuated by numerous extraordinary experiences, a particularly bizarre encounter involving a formidable orangutan on a beach in Barbados might just top the list. This revelation comes as the Manchester-born musician prepares to release a new memoir, adding to his existing autobiographical works.
Beyond his literary pursuits, Ryder is also gearing up for a new Happy Mondays album, marking the band’s first release in two decades. Reflecting on the recording sessions for their fourth studio album in 1992, Ryder recounted a startling face-off with a powerful ape.
The 63-year-old musician detailed the incident to The Sun, describing how an orangutan “just dropped out of the trees right in front of me.” He described the animal as a “f***ing big orangutan.” Local warnings about a great ape, infamously nicknamed Jack the Ripper, had reportedly circulated in the area, yet Ryder, in his own words, was determined to confront the creature.

His strategy was simple yet audacious: “don’t show any fear.” Ryder claims he then proceeded to growl aggressively at the ape, issuing a series of guttural roars and expletives, urging it to “f off, just f right off.” Miraculously, this bizarre confrontation seemed to work, leaving Ryder unharmed.
It’s important to note that orangutans are not indigenous to Barbados. Furthermore, Ryder has openly admitted to consuming an estimated “50 rocks of crack cocaine a day” during that period. Despite these mitigating factors, he remains adamant that the encounter was not a hallucination. The album recorded during this tumultuous time, incidentally, did not achieve chart success, and the band subsequently disbanded the following year.
Ryder’s recollections extend beyond primate confrontations. He has also shared harrowing accounts of being held hostage for two days in Amsterdam, witnessing a brutal shooting, and a narrow escape from a raid on a heroin house.
A New Chapter: Sobriety and Family Life
The iconic Gogglebox star has since turned his life around, achieving sobriety at the age of 40. His current home, shared with his wife Joanne and their children, is notably free of alcohol.

Two years ago, Ryder publicly expressed his profound affection for Joanne on Instagram, posting a heartfelt birthday message. He wrote, “Happy Birthday to my amazing wife Joanne. I really can’t put into words how much she means to me. You are the best – we love you loads.” He credits Joanne with playing a pivotal role in his journey to sobriety.
Together, Shaun and Joanne are parents to two children, Pearl and Lulu. Ryder often jokes about his role as their chauffeur, likening it to a “f***ing taxi service.” He acknowledges that his involvement in the lives of his four elder children from previous relationships was less consistent. He admits to not seeing them as much as he should have and reflects that he “wasn’t the best dad” during those times.
From Music Icon to Television Personality
Currently, Joanne manages the television aspects of Shaun Ryder’s career, which has seen him become a familiar face on various reality television programs. Alongside his long-time bandmate Mark Berry, famously known as Bez, Ryder is a regular fixture on Celebrity Gogglebox. The two Manchester legends even presented an award together at the Brits Awards held in their hometown last month.
Ryder’s adventurous spirit has also led him to the unforgiving environments of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! on two separate occasions, venturing into the jungle in both Australia and South Africa. His multifaceted career continues to captivate audiences, demonstrating a remarkable evolution from rock and roll rebel to a beloved television personality.
