Shettima’s Counsel, Tinubu’s Jet-Set Holiday

Nigerian Politics: Where Weddings Serve as Crucible for Power Plays and Personal Vows

In Nigeria, the political landscape imbues weddings with a significance far beyond the union of two individuals. These celebratory events transform into crucial arenas for political manoeuvring, where alliances are forged, strategies are debated, and sometimes, rivalries are intensified. For the nation’s political elite, attending a wedding is not merely a social obligation but a strategic imperative, a duty that cannot be easily delegated.

The presence of political leaders at these ceremonies, whether acting as a guardian for a governor’s daughter or solemnising a marriage, carries substantial weight. It signifies support, acknowledges influence, and provides a platform for discreet negotiations.

President Bola Tinubu has demonstrated this commitment firsthand. In May of the previous year, he curtailed a holiday in Europe to attend the wedding of Aisha, daughter of Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda, and Ahmed Usman. His participation involved offering blessings, signing what appeared to be a marriage certificate, and posing for photographs with the newlyweds and their families. Just four months later, in September, he travelled to Kaduna for the wedding of Nasirudeen Yari, the son of Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, underscoring the intertwined nature of political engagements and matrimonial celebrations.

Vice-Presidential Diplomacy and Marital Wisdom

This tradition of political attendance was recently exemplified when Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented President Tinubu at the wedding of Samuel Akume, son of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, in Makurdi. Arriving at the church, the Vice-President eschewed a passive role at the high table, choosing instead to impart his extensive marital wisdom, gleaned from over two decades of marriage to Hajiya Nana.

Shettima, known for his eloquent oratory, described the occasion as a moment that would be etched in memory, highlighting the significance of witnessing two lives converging. He posited that marriage is a foundational element of Nigeria’s social fabric and a critical driver of long-term national development, asserting that robust family units directly contribute to national cohesion.

His advice to the young couple resonated with timeless marital truths: “A home is not built by vows alone. It is built by everyday choices. By the decision to return kindness for impatience. By the courage to apologise even when you feel justified.”

A Tale of Two Weddings in One Family

While Shettima’s words of counsel to Samuel Akume were formally documented, a parallel, and perhaps more politically charged, marital event was unfolding within the same family. Only days prior, Senator George Akume, at the age of 72, had quietly married Queen Zaynab Ngohemba, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi. This union, announced via social media, quickly captured the attention of various media outlets and fuelled public discourse for days.

This confluence of events placed Senator Akume in a unique position: simultaneously a father celebrating his son’s nuptials and a groom embarking on a new marital journey himself. The proximity of these two significant weddings within the Akume family has led to a lighthearted observation that Benue State might as well be designated the “food basket of wedding rice.”

Although the official press release from the Presidency detailed Shettima’s advice to the younger Akume, there is no public record of his counsel to the elder statesman navigating his own recent marriage. However, it is reasonable to infer that any wisdom imparted to the son would have been shared, perhaps in a more private setting, with the father. After all, principles such as “listening, forgiveness, and mutual support” are universally applicable, transcending age and circumstance in the pursuit of marital harmony.

Shettima’s Multifaceted Role in Public Life

Beyond his engagements at weddings, Vice-President Shettima has proven to be a figure involved in various facets of Nigeria’s political and social life. Reports suggest that when not participating in political discussions or navigating challenging environmental conditions, he is often engaged in mediating disputes and fostering reconciliation. His intervention in the publicised feud between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, where he facilitated an awkward handshake, exemplifies his role in de-escalating political tensions.

Presidential Engagements and Diplomatic Travels

Meanwhile, President Tinubu has continued his end-of-year break with further international travel. Following his earlier visit to Paris, he has now embarked on the second leg of his European holiday. His itinerary includes a visit to Abu Dhabi for the 2026 edition of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit, an event to which he received a personal invitation from Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The President is scheduled to attend this summit from January 11 to 15, marking the second consecutive year he will miss the Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony. This period of international engagement highlights the President’s commitment to global diplomacy and sustainability initiatives, even amidst domestic political and social observances.
