Simon Cowell Admits He Was ‘Awful’ to Susan Boyle on Britain’s Got Talent

Simon Cowell Reflects on Past Mistakes with Susan Boyle

Simon Cowell has shared his reflections on the past behavior of himself, Amanda Holden, and Piers Morgan towards Susan Boyle during her 2009 audition on Britain’s Got Talent. In a recent interview, he described their actions as “awful and horrible,” acknowledging that their reactions were “disgusting” and had a significant impact on the singer.

The music mogul, aged 66, admitted that Susan’s audition was a wake-up call for the panel. He emphasized that they should not have “judged a book by its cover” after their initial responses to her appearance were broadcasted.

In an episode of Tales From the Celebrity Trenches, Simon spoke with Jamie East about the incident. Jamie started by saying, “Her audition to look back on is just awful. No one in that audition bathed themselves in a nice light did they?”

Simon responded, “I look back and I just think, ‘my God we look so awful, horrible.’ I actually don’t think we look bad enough. I think we were even worse than that and they went, ‘you look awful.'”

He continued, “And I said, ‘we are awful!’ All of us. I mean that look that Piers gives me, I think out of all the looks I’ve ever remembered that might be the worst. I was just as bad.”

Simon also mentioned that he had the power to cut out some of the negative content but felt it was a necessary lesson. “You can’t judge a book by its cover. We do look disgusting but you have to hold your hands up at that moment and go, ‘A lot of people are going to realise in about 24 hours that we are just horrible.'”

Susan Boyle’s Experience

Susan Boyle, who finished as a runner-up in the 2009 series, revealed that she felt like an “act in a freak show” during her first audition. She admitted feeling “suffocated” when she took to the stage, as people were “laughing at her crazy hair” and dress sense.

She told the Irish Mirror, “It felt quite suffocating, almost as though I was an act in a freak show, and that hurt. It was incredibly difficult to come to terms with for a time, but the positives have far outweighed the negatives.”

She continued, “Everyone was laughing at me; they wondered who this daft woman with the crazy hair was… and I had made a bad choice in clothes, so no-one had high expectations.”

Despite the initial criticism, Susan had the last laugh when she blew the judges and crowds away with her rendition of Les Misérables’ I Dreamed A Dream – becoming one of the most iconic reality show contestants ever.

Susan Boyle’s Journey to Success

Since then, Susan’s numerous global star appearances and recordings have earned her a fortune estimated at £30 million. Over the last year, she has undergone a busy rebrand period, working hard to increase her fitness and undergoing a “glow up” makeover that includes a new blonde hairstyle.

This transformation coincides with a noticeable upturn in Susan’s social media output. She has posted snaps with famous faces like Sir Elton John, Peter Kay, Lionel Richie, Masterchef star Marcus Wareing, and Irish singer Daniel O’Donnell on Instagram, where she has amassed 178,000 followers.

She has also become more playful in her posts, sharing a pic of herself in an Oasis T-shirt and bucket hat as well as childhood pictures. Additionally, she has started promoting her own Subo merchandise, featuring clothing and accessories priced between £13 and £50 on her posts.
