Sister Demands Brother’s Life or Charges: Missing BSU Graduate Case

A Sister’s Plea: Unraveling the Disappearance of Achov Paul

The quiet life of Achov Ruth, a 22-year-old student from the Udei community in Benue State, Nigeria, has been shattered by the sudden and mysterious disappearance of her only sibling, Achov Paul. Missing since August 2nd, 2025, Paul was reportedly taken into police custody following an alleged shooting incident at a police station. His sister, speaking with deep concern, recounts the events and her desperate search for answers.

The Allegations and the Arrest

The ordeal began with an alleged shooting incident. According to Ruth, the police claimed her brother was involved. “They said one Mr. Justine Yongu took my brother there to carry out the operation,” she explained. Upon hearing this, Paul confronted Mr. Yongu, urging him to clear his name as he maintained his innocence. Mr. Yongu, however, reportedly expressed an unwillingness to go to the police himself, fearing he would appear untrustworthy.

Ruth learned of her brother’s arrest after the police had already taken him into custody and brought him to their home. During this visit, Paul instructed a cousin to contact a lawyer. Tragically, the cousin was also taken by the police.

“A week later, when our cousin went back to the police station to give him food, he was told that Paul was no longer there,” Ruth shared, her voice trembling. “It’s just the two of us, and our parents are both late. Aside from our cousin, I don’t know anyone else.” She was informed that the Divisional Police Officer of Daudu had specifically accused Paul of involvement in the shooting, a claim that left her stunned. “I’m actually shocked because my brother was not even around when the incident occurred,” she asserted.

A Void at the Police Station

When Ruth visited the police station seeking information, she encountered a wall of denial and deflection. “The police officer I met told me the arrest of my brother was not made by them,” she recounted. Her inquiries at the division where he was reportedly detained yielded similar responses. “The person I met there also said the arrest was not made by them,” she stated. Officials claimed they merely assisted the former Divisional Police Officer of Daudu Police Station in the arrest and had no knowledge of Paul’s current whereabouts.

A Brother’s Last Words of Wisdom

The last time Ruth saw her brother was on August 2nd, 2025. Their conversation was filled with paternal advice. “He advised me to take my academic activities seriously,” she recalled. “He said I am an orphan and should put in more effort, as my education remained the only opportunity he had to help me with the little he could afford.”

Paul also cautioned her against romantic entanglements, emphasizing the importance of focusing on her studies. “He told me not to be deceived by any boy, because all they would need from me was sex, so I should focus on my education,” Ruth said. He expressed hope for a brighter future, believing that their current struggles were not permanent. “He believes better days are coming and things won’t be like they are now forever,” she added. He encouraged her to be patient and not to envy others, assuring her that her time to enjoy life would come.

Unforeseen Circumstances and a Plea for Justice

The conversation also touched upon financial matters. Ruth had to return to Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic in Lafia, Nasarawa State, for the second semester. When she called Paul for financial assistance, he explained he was in the village and planned to send food items from there to her in Lafia once he returned to Makurdi. He also intended to send money, having already invested in his farming activities.

Ruth has taken formal steps to address her brother’s disappearance. She has engaged a lawyer and a human rights activist, Ukan Kurugh, who have filed a formal complaint. However, as of now, there has been no response from the authorities.

When questioned about any possibility of her brother’s involvement in the alleged shooting, Ruth vehemently denied it. “Absolutely not!” she declared. “My brother was always tending to his farm when the incident occurred. He wasn’t even in town, let alone near the police station. I can say with full confidence that he is not involved in such activities.”

The Emotional and Physical Toll

The disappearance of her brother has had a profound impact on Ruth’s life. “The situation has affected me so much, especially emotionally,” she admitted. “At my age, my blood pressure has become high, and it is taking a toll on my health. My education has also suffered, as I find it difficult to focus on my studies due to the stress and anxiety about my brother’s disappearance.”

A Desperate Hope for Resolution

Ruth’s plea to the authorities is urgent. “I hope that the authorities will take immediate action to find my brother and bring him to safety,” she implored. “I also appeal to the public for any information that may lead to his whereabouts. Any help or support will be greatly appreciated.”

Profiling Achov Paul

Achov Paul is described by his sister as a kind, tall, dark-complexioned, and gentle young man who is not one for excessive talking. He holds a degree in Philosophy from Benue State University. At 27 years old, he had aspirations of a philosophical career but, due to the challenging economic climate and lack of job opportunities, had turned to farming. His occupation involved buying, storing, and later selling crops.

On Suspicion and Due Process

Ruth expressed strong opposition to the idea that her brother might have been killed based on mere suspicion. “Killed? How? Why would they kill him?” she questioned, her voice filled with disbelief and distress. “The police should never attempt such an act because he is innocent until proven guilty, and at best, only a suspect until a court of law pronounces him a culprit.”

She emphasized the fundamental principles of justice. “I do not believe anyone should be killed based on suspicion alone. Even if there were allegations that he was among those who shot sporadically at the police station, allegations are not proof. The rule of law demands proper investigation, arrest, and trial. Extrajudicial actions undermine justice, erode public trust in law enforcement, and violate fundamental human rights. Every suspect deserves the chance to defend themselves in court. Anything outside this process is unlawful and unacceptable.”

Dissatisfaction and the Path Forward

Ruth is far from satisfied with the current handling of her brother’s case. “I am not really satisfied because everything is just silent and I don’t know his whereabouts. I’m worried about my brother’s safety,” she stated. “If they have evidence, they should charge him to court and if he’s innocent, they should clear his name.”

Her ultimate desire is clear: “I want the police to conduct a proper investigation and release my brother. We just want justice and for his name to be cleared.”
