South Sydney High: Two Years of HSC Improvement Excellence

South Sydney High School is making waves in the academic arena, celebrating a remarkable achievement for the second consecutive year. The Maroubra-based school has been recognised by the Department of Education for its significant growth in the number of students achieving the top three bands in the Higher School Certificate (HSC). This prestigious recognition places South Sydney High School among an elite group of only three schools in the entire state to have made the “most improved” list for two years running.

Janice Neilsen, the principal who took the helm seven years ago, has overseen this impressive turnaround, with improving HSC results a key priority from the outset. “The team since 2019 have worked incredibly hard — both in the classroom and out of the classroom in the community — to improve the reputation of the school and to improve results,” Ms Neilsen stated, highlighting the collective effort behind the success.

The dedication of the school’s staff has been a cornerstone of this transformation. Ms Neilsen emphasised the passion of the school’s more than 70 teachers, who are deeply invested in their students’ success. “They all wanted to improve the results … and get that message out to the community,” she explained. This shared commitment was the crucial first step in elevating the school’s academic standing.

Cultivating a Strong Learning Environment

Beyond teacher dedication, South Sydney High School has focused on establishing a robust learning environment. This involved ensuring consistency and structure in several key areas:

  • Behaviour Management: Implementing clear and consistent strategies to foster a positive and orderly atmosphere conducive to learning.
  • Teaching and Learning: Standardising approaches to curriculum delivery and pedagogical methods to ensure a high-quality educational experience for all students.
  • High Expectations with High Support: Creating a culture where students are encouraged to strive for excellence, with ample support systems in place to help them achieve their goals.

Ms Neilsen believes that establishing this strong foundation allows the school to effectively focus on the academic aspects of education. “If you get that environment right, you can then focus the academic part of it,” she noted.

Furthermore, the school has actively fostered a deeper framework of values, emphasising the importance of:

  • Manners: Promoting courteous and respectful interactions among students and staff.
  • Attendance: Encouraging regular and consistent presence in school to maximise learning opportunities.
  • Punctuality: Instilling the value of timeliness and preparedness.
  • Respect: Cultivating an environment of mutual regard and understanding.
  • Citizenship: Developing responsible and engaged members of the school and wider community.

This holistic approach has clearly paid dividends, with South Sydney High School being identified as one of 45 schools across NSW for its outstanding HSC academic improvement. This recognition comes at a time when the NSW government has set ambitious system-wide targets for academic achievement, HSC attainment, and school attendance for all public schools.

Education and Early Learning Minister Prue Car commended the achievements, stating, “These results show what can be achieved when teachers can focus their time and expertise in the classroom, providing high-impact teaching for their students.”

Beyond Academics: Growth in Enrolment and Cultural Impact

The success at South Sydney High School extends beyond just HSC results. Ms Neilsen has also been instrumental in boosting student enrolment numbers. In 2016, the school’s enrolment stood at approximately 500 students. Today, that number has grown to nearly 800. This significant increase reflects a revitalised school culture and a growing reputation within the community.

“I always remember my first HSC group had 42 students, whereas now … last year’s group was about 120 [year 12] students,” Ms Neilsen remarked, illustrating the dramatic growth in the senior cohort. “I think that’s the goal of any principal — to improve academic results, school culture, student enrolment numbers.”

Adding an exciting dimension to the student experience, South Sydney High School has also become a filming location for the popular Netflix series, Heartbreak High. The original 1990s series was famously filmed on the grounds of the now-closed Maroubra Bay High School, which occupied the same site. The rebooted series, which premiered in 2022, chose the current Maroubra campus, a decision that Ms Neilsen highlighted as beneficial for both the school and its students.

“The students quite enjoyed it,” she said. “There’s a lot of careers and pathways in the entertainment industry, so there were some benefits there for us for sure.” This provided students with unique opportunities to engage with the arts and explore potential career paths within the creative sector.

As a proud public co-educational school, Ms Neilsen hopes the community will continue to rally behind the dedication and hard work of all its students and staff. “I am very proud of the team I’ve got and most importantly the students that have achieved it,” she concluded, underscoring the collective pride in the school’s journey of improvement and success.
