As the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season looms, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) find themselves in a precarious position, grappling with a significant bowling injury crisis that has former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra expressing serious concerns. With less than a week to go before the tournament commences, the team’s overseas bowling stocks have been severely depleted, casting a shadow over their campaign.
Overseas Bowling Woes
The absence of key overseas pacers Captain Pat Cummins and Eshan Malinga at the start of the season is a considerable blow. To compound matters, Jack Edwards is unfortunately set to miss the entire tournament. This leaves SRH with a dramatically thinned-out international bowling contingent.
“There will be challenges because the bowling has been dealt a serious blow,” Chopra remarked on his YouTube channel. “Pat Cummins was already not there. So, the bowling was already slightly weak, and if Eshan Malinga is also not there, it means you will have to play Brydon Carse, or else you won’t be able to play with Indian bowling.”
This leaves England’s Brydon Carse as SRH’s sole overseas bowling option. However, Carse’s recent international T20I experience is limited, with his last appearance dating back to October 2025, and he was notably absent from the recently concluded T20 World Cup squad. This lack of recent match practice at the highest level could be a concern for the Hyderabad franchise.
Indian Bowling Strength Questioned
While SRH boasts a decent number of Indian bowlers, Chopra believes their collective strength doesn’t measure up to the formidable lineups of rival teams. He articulated a worrying scenario: if SRH’s potent batting lineup manages to post a mammoth total of over 250 runs, their weakened bowling attack might struggle to defend it, potentially conceding a similar score.
Chopra elaborated on his assessment of the available Indian bowling resources: “When I see their bowling, it has Amit Kumar, Praful Hinge, Sakib Hussain, Omkar Tarmale, Jaydev Unadkat, Zeeshan Ansari, Harshal Patel, Shivam Mavi, Shivang Kumar and Harsh Dubey, but the bowling is weak. How they manage the bowling will be a challenge because if they score 250, they might concede 250. Their bowling looks like that. Unfortunately, that much might is not being seen in their bowling.”
Despite Chopra’s reservations, the responsibility of spearheading the Indian bowling attack will largely fall on the experienced shoulders of Jaydev Unadkat and Harshal Patel. This seasoned duo showcased their wicket-taking abilities last season, collectively bagging 27 wickets. Their performance will be crucial in mitigating the impact of the overseas bowling absences.

The franchise will be hoping for quick recoveries and perhaps some inspired last-minute signings to bolster their beleaguered bowling department.
