Cross-Code Star Mark Nawaqanitawase Considers Future in Both Rugby Codes
Mark Nawaqanitawase, a versatile athlete known for his cross-code prowess, has not ruled out the possibility of returning to the National Rugby League (NRL) in the future. As he prepares to transition back to rugby union, his focus is on securing a spot in the Wallabies’ World Cup squad.
Nawaqanitawase will conclude his three-year tenure with the Sydney Roosters at the end of this season before heading to Japan to join the Saitama Wild Knights. During a media session in Bondi, the 25-year-old player avoided direct questions about his future representation in both codes. However, he did mention that he has been involved in discussions regarding a potential debut for the NSW Blues and even attended a pre-season Origin camp.
Despite these developments, Nawaqanitawase admitted he hasn’t received any recent communication from coach Laurie Daley. While expressing his dream of playing for the Blues, he consistently emphasized that his current focus is on his performance with the Roosters.
When asked about a potential spring campaign with the Wallabies, Nawaqanitawase said it’s “the last thing on my mind.” However, he acknowledged that his abilities as an athlete have evolved since switching to league.
“I’m a different player to what I was two or three years ago,” he said. “In a non-arrogant way, bigger, better and faster. I’ve grown up a little bit. My physical aspect means I can do a lot more and just (be better) defensively as well. I’ve learned so much that I know it will make me a better player wherever I go.”
The question of whether he might return to the NRL remains open. “Like I’ve said before, it could be an option, but it’s so far away so I don’t know,” he said.

Nawaqanitawase also expressed his emotional attachment to the Roosters, stating, “I’m going to miss everyone.” He reflected on the realization that his time with the club is coming to an end, saying, “It’s been quite sad thinking about it because I love the club, I love the boys.”
His teammate Angus Crichton is also following a similar path, leaving the Roosters for rugby union at the end of the season. For Nawaqanitawase, the emotions of saying goodbye to his teammates haven’t fully set in yet.
“Knowing it was probably going to be my last Anzac Day game I had a few thoughts, but I’m not thinking big picture yet so I guess those emotions will probably come down the track later on,” he said.
