High School Wrestling Tournament Highlights: Local Talent Shines

The competitive arena of high school wrestling saw fierce battles and impressive performances from student-athletes across various divisions. From the intense matchups in Division I to the promising talent in Division II and III, and the dynamic contests in the girls’ divisions, local wrestlers demonstrated grit, skill, and determination on the mat.

Division I Showdowns

In the 106-pound weight class, Bennett Wachter of Elyria faced a challenging series of bouts. He began with a 10-0 major decision loss to Preston Webb of Miamisburg. Undeterred, Wachter responded with a strong 16-7 major decision victory over Blackburn Savage from Moeller. His tournament run continued with a tough loss via pin in 4:57 against Greyson Boner of Harrison. Wachter is slated to compete for 8th place against Emilio Rodriguez of Louisville.

Also in the 106-pound bracket, DJ Otero from Lorain showcased resilience. He secured a hard-fought 4-3 win via ultimate tiebreaker against Emilio Rodriguez of Louisville. Otero then faced Collin Bagdonas of Perrysburg, ultimately losing 8-0 by decision. His next challenge will be against Harrison’s Greyson Boner in the consolation semifinals.

At 215 pounds, Eian Englehart of Avon delivered a dominant performance. He opened with an 11-0 major decision win over James Moore of Normandy. Englehart continued his strong showing with an 11-5 decision victory against EJ German of Brecksville. He is now set to compete in the final against Aiden Peterson of St. Edward.

Division II Competitions

The 106-pound division in Division II featured Grady Moos of Elyria Catholic making significant strides. Moos secured a swift victory via pin in 2:50 over Sid Hunt of Bishop Watterson. He followed this with a close 10-9 decision win against Jordan Bates of Beaver Local. Moos is now advancing to the final to face Zane Russell of Wapakoneta.

In the 157-pound category, Aiden Kyser of Vermilion demonstrated his offensive capabilities. He achieved a pin in 3:59 against Ronald Johnson II of Chaminade Julienne. Kyser then faced Aiden Proctor of Madison Comprehensive, where he lost 9-3 by decision. He will now compete for eighth place against Ethan Lewis of Upper Sandusky.

Division III Battles

The 113-pound weight class in Division III saw two local competitors in action. Bodey Gibbs of Columbia began his campaign with a solid 5-0 decision victory over Jaxten DeWeese of Tinora. Gibbs then engaged in a tight match against Cooper Breslin of Graham Local, ultimately losing 7-4 in sudden victory. He is scheduled to face Chance Wuhr of Lake Catholic in the consolation semifinals.

Also in the 113-pound division, Noah Huston of Clearview faced a challenging path. He was defeated 9-4 by decision by Jayce Nixon of Martins Ferry. Huston then rebounded with a pin in 3:11 over Sam Million of Preble Shawnee. However, his tournament concluded with a loss via pin in 2:27 to Chance Wuhr of Lake Catholic. Huston will now compete for eighth place against Jaxten DeWeese of Tinora.

In the 120-pound bracket, Michael Frye of Columbia exhibited his competitive spirit. He secured a 7-6 decision win over Langston McClain of Allen East. Frye then faced Derion Williams of Trinity in a closely contested match, ultimately losing 5-4 by decision. He is set to compete in the consolation semifinals against Jaxon Aberegg of Barnesville.

Girls’ Wrestling Highlights

The girls’ wrestling divisions also showcased thrilling performances. At 100 pounds, Cali Otero of Lorain faced tough opponents. She was eliminated after two consecutive losses via pin, first to Aniya Polk of Shaw in 1:54, and then to Giulia Zayas of Aurora in 3:48.

Destiny Cabot of Avon Lake was also eliminated in the 100-pound division after a 2-0 decision loss to Avery Riley of Marysville.

In the 115-pound weight class, Gianna Sanfilippo of North Ridgeville was eliminated via pin in 1:43 by Katilyn Tanner of Northmont.

Emilie Conley of Elyria competed strongly in the 120-pound division. She was initially defeated via pin in 1:39 by Meredith Greenslade of Clyde. Conley then rallied with a pin in 1:35 over Riley Robinson of Lakewood and a dominant 15-0 technical fall victory against Caroline Davis of Ross. She will advance to face Lila Krull of Miamisburg in the consolation semifinals.

Youstina Hanna of Columbia showcased her skills in the 140-pound division. She secured a 13-8 win in overtime against Paige Menough of Salem. Hanna then faced Nora Johnson of Hartley, losing 9-0 by major decision. She is slated to compete in the consolation semifinals against Kiera Depinet of Seneca East.

Jaelyn Green of Elyria was a force in the 145-pound division. She experienced a loss via pin in 4:56 to Reese Thomas of Alder. Green then demonstrated her prowess with a pin in 2:20 over Andrea Mendez of Marysville, followed by another pin in 4:12 against Annalise Rapp of Indian Lake. She will compete in the consolation semifinals against Tara Davis of Olentangy Orange.

Seraiah Jackson of Elyria was eliminated in the 170-pound division after being pinned in 2:20 by Rylee Dearwester of Harrison.
