Tragedy on the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway: Eight Lives Lost in Devastating Collision
A catastrophic road accident at Katumaini, along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa Highway in Machakos County, has resulted in the tragic deaths of eight individuals. The collision, described as horrific by survivors, also left numerous others with varying degrees of injuries, who are currently receiving medical attention.

The incident unfolded when two vehicles, a shuttle en route to Mombasa and a Tahmeed bus travelling from the coastal city to Nairobi, collided head-on. The sheer force of the impact caused extensive damage to both vehicles, trapping many passengers within the mangled wreckage. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched from Muumandu and Kyumbi to the scene to commence rescue operations.
Survivor Accounts: A Glimpse into the Heartbreak
Survivors, speaking from their hospital beds at Machakos Level 5 Hospital, recounted the terrifying moments leading up to and immediately after the collision. Many expressed a profound sense of fortune to have escaped the wreckage alive, despite their injuries.
Meshack Mutua, a passenger on one of the vehicles, described the harrowing experience from his hospital bed. “I saw the moment the two vehicles collided head-on,” he stated, his voice strained by pain. “The bus was badly damaged, and when I looked around, some passengers were unconscious while others were already dead.” Mutua managed to extricate himself by crawling through a bus window, but was too weak to move further and lay on the ground until medical assistance arrived.
Another survivor, Theophilus Martin, recounted regaining consciousness to find himself surrounded by people desperately trying to free him. “The door of the vehicle had jammed, so people were breaking the windows to pull us out and into the ambulance that was already on standby,” he explained. These accounts paint a vivid picture of the chaos and immediate danger faced by those involved.
The Sequence of Events: How the Catastrophe Unfolded
Mukaa Sub-County police commander Hussein Abduba confirmed the details surrounding the accident. The collision occurred when the Naekana shuttle, travelling towards Mombasa, attempted to overtake a lorry. In a tragic turn of events, the Tahmeed bus, heading in the opposite direction, suddenly appeared, leaving the shuttle driver with insufficient time and space to avoid a direct impact.
The head-on collision resulted in the immediate loss of six lives at the scene. Two additional victims succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital, bringing the total death toll to eight. Dozens of others sustained injuries, ranging from minor to severe, and are currently undergoing medical care.
The accident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers of road travel and the critical importance of safe driving practices, particularly on high-traffic routes like the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway. Investigations into the exact circumstances of the crash are ongoing, with authorities aiming to understand all contributing factors to prevent future tragedies. The community mourns the loss of life and extends its support to those injured and their families during this difficult time.
