Swans Star Fined for Diving Drama in Hawthorn Defeat

AFL Round-Up: Swans Defender Cops Staging Fine, Hawthorn Tackle Cleared

The Australian Football League (AFL) has seen a number of incidents come under scrutiny this past week, with Sydney Swans defender Tom McCartin facing a significant penalty for “staging” during a recent clash against Hawthorn. Meanwhile, Hawthorn’s Mabior Chol has been cleared of any wrongdoing following a tackle that resulted in Sydney’s Nick Blakey being driven headfirst into the turf.

McCartin’s Theatrical Fall Leads to Staging Charge

The incident involving McCartin occurred during the Swans’ encounter with Hawthorn on Thursday night. Following a free kick awarded to Hawthorn’s Jack Gunston, McCartin was involved in a contest with Hawthorn’s Mabior Chol. Chol delivered a one-handed push to McCartin’s chest. In what has been described as a theatrical attempt to influence the umpire, McCartin then flopped to the ground.

This exaggerated reaction did not go unnoticed by the AFL match review officer, who subsequently laid a “staging” charge against the Swans defender. Staging, in AFL terms, refers to an act of simulation or attempting to deceive the umpire into awarding a free kick or penalty through artificial means. McCartin has the option to accept a $1000 fine by entering an early guilty plea, avoiding further scrutiny or a more severe penalty.

Teammate Also Fined for Umpire Contact

It wasn’t just McCartin who faced disciplinary action from the Swans. Teammate Angus Sheldrick has also been fined $1000 for careless contact with an umpire. Such incidents, even if unintentional, are taken seriously by the league to maintain the integrity of the game and protect its officials.

Chol Cleared Over Blakey Tackle

In a separate incident, Mabior Chol has been exonerated of any fault for his tackle on Sydney’s dynamic player, Nick Blakey. The tackle, which saw Blakey’s head make forceful contact with the MCG turf, was initially rewarded with a free kick to Sydney for holding the ball.

The AFL’s statement regarding the incident clarified the decision-making process. “Blakey has possession of the ball and Chol approaches from behind, tackling Blakey to ground,” the statement read. “It was the view of the MRO that Chol did not use excessive force in tackling Blakey and his actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances. No further action was taken.” This assessment indicates that while the contact was significant, Chol’s actions were deemed a legitimate football tackle within the rules of the game, with no intent to cause undue harm.

Hawthorn Secures Victory Over Swans

The match itself saw Hawthorn emerge victorious by 17 points, marking a significant win for the Hawks. This triumph also handed the Sydney Swans their first loss of the current season, highlighting the competitive nature of the league and the unpredictability of outcomes. The performance from Hawthorn will undoubtedly boost their confidence as they continue their campaign.
