Swifts Snatch Victory by a Point in Thriller

Swifts Snatch Victory in Thrilling Super Netball Showdown

In a nail-biting encounter that had fans on the edge of their seats, the NSW Swifts have secured a dramatic 70-69 triumph over the Melbourne Mavericks in a Super Netball clash at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena. The victory, sealed by a last-gasp shot from English sharpshooter Helen Housby, marks a significant turnaround for the Swifts after a disappointing start to the season.

The atmosphere was electric, with a regular season record crowd of 13,462 spectators packing the arena for the second game of a highly anticipated double header. Despite scoring the opening goal, the Swifts found themselves trailing for the majority of the match. The visiting Mavericks asserted early dominance, establishing a seven-goal lead in the first quarter.

However, the Swifts demonstrated remarkable resilience, gradually chipping away at the deficit. They strategically outscored the Mavericks in the final three quarters by margins of three, one, and three goals respectively. This relentless pressure culminated in the dying seconds, with Housby coolly slotting a close-range shot with just two seconds remaining on the clock, securing a memorable win for her team.

Helen Housby, often dubbed the “ice queen” for her composure under pressure, has consistently proven her mettle in clutch moments throughout her career. Reflecting on the pressure of such situations, Housby shared her perspective: “It feels like I’ve been playing with that pressure since I started my career. I quite like shouldering that. I think that’s when the best stuff comes out.” This mentality was on full display as she delivered the decisive blow.

The Swifts’ path to this victory was far from straightforward. They had endured a challenging period, losing seven of their past nine Super Netball games, despite having made the finals in 2025. Their season opener had been particularly rough, with a heavy 74-54 defeat. “It means so much,” Housby stated post-match. “We said before the game this was the perfect occasion for us to bounce back. We weren’t happy with that performance last week and I personally was really disappointed.”

While Housby contributed significantly to the Swifts’ scoring, converting 16 out of 22 attempts, she did miss five of her nine Super Shots. In contrast, Silver Fern Grace Nweke was a formidable presence for the Swifts, netting an impressive 47 goals from 51 attempts and sinking three of her four long-range Super Shots.

A pivotal moment in the Swifts’ resurgence came with the introduction of midcourter Maddy Proud at halftime. Celebrating her 150th game, Proud injected vital energy into the team, significantly impacting their performance in the second half.

The Mavericks, despite their strong start, ultimately succumbed to the Swifts’ sustained pressure. While they managed five more interceptions and eight more general gains throughout the match, their discipline wavered, leading to 23 more penalties. In a strategic move during the fourth quarter, the Mavericks replaced shooter Shimona Nelson (54/57) with Uneeq Palacio, aiming to bolster their Super Shot capabilities.

“Credit to the Mavs, they played incredible tonight,” acknowledged Proud. “I thought our defence really stood up in that second half and got us a lot of ball back.” This defensive effort, coupled with Housby’s steely nerves, proved to be the winning combination for the Swifts. The team will be looking to build on this momentum as they continue their Super Netball campaign.
