A Sydney rock frontman is confronting the grim prospect of life behind bars following his alleged involvement in a massive international drug syndicate, which police estimate to be worth a staggering $5.5 million. Authorities have apprehended eight individuals, including Azaria Byrne, the frontman of the rock band The Art, who is accused of orchestrating this illicit operation from a music studio located in Sydney’s inner west.
Detectives have revealed that their investigation has uncovered a sophisticated network allegedly responsible for the coordination, manufacture, and distribution of a wide array of illegal narcotics. These include potent substances such as ketamine, cocaine, MDMA, and LSD, impacting communities both locally and internationally.
Major Police Raids Across Sydney
The crackdown involved extensive police activity yesterday, with officers executing search warrants on eight properties across several Sydney suburbs. The locations targeted included Potts Point, Earlwood, Dulwich Hill, Leichhardt, Marrickville, and Balmain, signalling the widespread nature of the alleged operation.
The initial raid commenced at approximately 6:40 am at a residence in Potts Point. During this operation, a 33-year-old man was arrested. Police reported the seizure of illegal drugs and a significant sum of cash, exceeding $37,000. The man was subsequently transported to Surry Hills Police Station and faces numerous charges, including 17 counts of supplying a large commercial quantity of illicit drugs.

A Music Studio as a Drug Hub
Shortly after the Potts Point raid, police executed a search warrant at a music studio in Leichhardt, a suburb known for its vibrant arts and culture scene. This location proved to be a significant discovery for law enforcement.
Inside the studio, officers allegedly uncovered an enormous cache of illegal substances. The seized items included:
- Approximately 25 kilograms of ketamine
- Over 17 kilograms of cannabis
- 2.5 kilograms of cocaine
- 3.5 kilograms of MDMA
- 5.6 kilograms of diazepam
- More than 500 grams of psilocybin (magic mushrooms)

Further to these substantial drug seizures, the raid also yielded approximately 70 grams of methamphetamine, a staggering quantity of over 18,000 tablets believed to contain LSD, and a further $200,000 in cash.
Ongoing Investigations and Arrests
The police operation continued throughout the day, with further raids conducted at multiple properties in Earlwood, Dulwich Hill, and Marrickville. These subsequent searches also resulted in the confiscation of additional drugs and cash, indicating the extensive reach of the alleged syndicate.
Superintendent Gretchen Atkins lauded the operation as an “excellent investigation,” emphasising the positive impact on community safety. “Tonight, there are less drugs on the streets of Sydney,” she stated, highlighting the success of the police efforts in disrupting the flow of illegal substances.
Bail Denied for Key Accused
Azaria Byrne, the frontman of The Art, and his fiancée, Brooke Mitchell, were both denied bail. They appeared in court today to face the serious charges laid against them. The remaining six individuals apprehended in connection with the alleged drug ring have also been charged with offences pertaining to the supply of illegal drugs and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to dismantle what they describe as a significant international drug distribution network. The scale of the seizures suggests a sophisticated and well-established operation, with the potential for further arrests and discoveries as the police delve deeper into the syndicate’s activities. The charges faced by the accused carry severe penalties, underscoring the gravity of the alleged crimes.
