Taggart’s Record-Breaking Goal Secures Crucial Draw for Perth Glory
Perth Glory’s captain, Adam Taggart, etched his name in the club’s history books last night, scoring a club-record 60th A-League Men goal to snatch a vital 1-1 draw against Melbourne City. This late surge by Taggart keeps the Glory’s slim finals hopes alive in a hard-fought encounter at HBF Park.
For large portions of the match, it appeared the reigning champions, Melbourne City, would secure a narrow victory. Daniel Arzani’s well-taken goal in the 21st minute, coupled with a string of impressive saves from City’s goalkeeper Patrick Beach, had seemed sufficient to seal the three points. However, Taggart’s dramatic intervention in the 90th minute not only salvaged a point for his side but also cemented his status as the Glory’s all-time leading scorer in the A-League Men.
Speaking after the match, the 32-year-old expressed the profound significance of the milestone. “It means the world,” Taggart told Paramount Plus. “Obviously, I grew up watching Damian Mori and Bobby Despotovski score goals here. To reach this number is special for me.”

Prior to his late heroics, Taggart had endured a frustrating evening, finding himself on a six-game scoring drought. Despite consistently testing City’s defence, his efforts had been met with admirable resistance from Beach. The pressure of being on the cusp of the record, and the accompanying dip in his form, had clearly been weighing on the striker, who is currently not in the Socceroos squad. He candidly admitted that the prospect of reaching 60 goals, a mark he shared with former Glory favourite Andy Keogh, had been a mental burden. “I didn’t think I would be able to buy one tonight,” Taggart quipped, reflecting on his earlier struggles.
The draw leaves Perth, under the guidance of Adam Griffiths, in 11th place on the ladder with 24 points. While they remain winless in their last seven outings, they are now just five points adrift of the coveted top six. Melbourne City, meanwhile, missed a golden opportunity to climb into sixth place themselves.
Melbourne City’s Frustration and a Glimmer of Hope
Melbourne City, currently occupying ninth spot with 26 points, find themselves trailing sixth-placed Macarthur FC (29 points), Central Coast Mariners (27 points), and Wellington Phoenix (27 points). While they do possess a game in hand over some of their rivals, this draw will sting.
Despite the disappointment of conceding a late equaliser, there were positive signs for coach Alen Vidmar’s squad, particularly the performance of Daniel Arzani. The winger, who was surprisingly overlooked for Australia’s recent international fixtures against Cameroon and Curacao, delivered a standout display. This was Arzani’s first goal since joining City on loan from Ferencváros in January, marking a welcome return to form. The goal originated from a moment of skill from in-form winger Marcus Younis, who skillfully beat a defender before delivering a cross into the box. City striker Max Caputo did well to knock the ball down, and Arzani was quickest to react, calmly taking a touch to set himself before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.
However, after Arzani’s opener, the momentum shifted, and Perth began to assert their dominance. Melbourne City’s defence, spearheaded by the experienced Aziz Behich and the exceptional goalkeeping of Beach, worked tirelessly to thwart Taggart’s advances. Perth’s own goalkeeper, Matt Sutton, also played a crucial role in keeping his team in the contest, denying Emin Durakovic and Marcus Younis in quick succession in the 88th minute, crucial saves that ultimately paved the way for Taggart’s late heroics.
The pivotal moment arrived when Taggart, through a combination of skill and determination, found Jaiden Kucharski. Taggart then made a clever run to receive the ball back in a dangerous position before unleashing a powerful strike that found the back of the net, levelling the scores and igniting celebrations amongst the home faithful.
Looking ahead, Perth Glory will travel to face Central Coast Mariners in their next fixture, while Melbourne City will host Western Sydney Wanderers. Both teams will be eager to build on their performances, with the race for finals football intensifying.
