The Secret to Youthful Skin: Joe Chen’s Holistic Approach
Actress Joe Chen, known for her radiant appearance at the age of 47, has shared insights into her skincare and wellness routine. Her approach combines dietary choices, traditional therapies, and lifestyle habits that contribute to her youthful look.
Collagen-Rich Diet and Natural Remedies
Chen credits a diet rich in collagen-containing organ meats, such as pig intestines and pig brains, for maintaining her skin’s elasticity and overall health. These foods are believed to support skin structure and promote a healthy complexion. In addition, she incorporates grapefruit into her daily meals as part of a weight management strategy. By eating half a grapefruit or drinking its juice with each meal while avoiding starches, she claims to have lost significant weight quickly. Grapefruit is low in calories and high in naringin, a compound that may aid in stabilizing blood sugar and boosting metabolism.
In addition to plant-based milk, Chen includes animal organ meats in her diet. Many people avoid organ meats due to their strong flavor. However, Chen said in a reality show that eating items such as pig intestines and pig brain has contributed to her youthful looks.
She noted that pig intestines are high in collagen, which supports skin elasticity, while pig brains contain phospholipids that may help protect the brain and aid cell repair. Iron-rich organ meats are also considered beneficial for improving circulation and giving the complexion a healthy, rosy appearance, particularly for those prone to anemia.
Soy Milk and Hormonal Balance
Chen also emphasizes the importance of soy milk in her routine. Rich in isoflavones, soy milk can support collagen production, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and promote brighter-looking skin. It may also help regulate hormones. She recommends choosing low-sugar or unsweetened varieties to manage calorie intake and maintain a healthy figure.
Traditional Acupuncture for Skincare
Beyond skincare, Chen follows a grapefruit-based diet to manage her weight. At each meal, she eats half a grapefruit or drinks a glass of grapefruit juice alongside other foods while eliminating starches. She follows the regimen for 12 consecutive days, then takes a two-day break before repeating the cycle. She said the plan once helped her lose 3 kilograms in six days.
Grapefruit is low in calories, containing about 42 calories per 100 grams, yet can promote a feeling of fullness. It also contains naringin, a compound that may help stabilize blood sugar levels and support metabolism, making it a popular alternative to higher-calorie carbohydrates.
Chen also turns to cosmetic acupuncture, or facial acupuncture, a traditional therapy that uses ultra-fine needles applied across the body.
She said the treatment not only relieves shoulder and neck pain and reduces the appearance of a “dowager’s hump,” but also helps firm facial muscles. Practitioners say the technique works by stimulating circulation and targeting layers of skin, fat, and muscle to improve skin tone, reduce dark spots, minimize pores, and create a lifting effect.
Soaking in the Bath for Overall Wellness
Another key part of Chen’s routine is soaking in the bath. She said she enjoys hot baths for their ability to induce sweating, which she believes can be more effective than exercise.
Bathing may help improve circulation, relax muscles, and reduce water retention, contributing to a slimmer, more toned appearance. However, experts caution that prolonged hot baths may not be suitable for people with a history of cardiovascular disease or diabetes.
A Star Known for Her Radiant Appearance
Chen, often dubbed the “Queen of Idol Dramas,” rose to fame with leading roles in hit series such as “The Prince Who Turns Into a Frog,” “Fated to Love You,” and “The Queen of SOP.”
