Tbilisi Thrills: Day 2 Delivers Dramatic Finishes

The Tbilisi Arena buzzed with energy on day two of the Tbilisi Grand Slam 2026, as judokas from across the globe vied for supremacy on the tatami. A palpable sense of anticipation filled the stadium, amplified by the passionate roars of the Georgian crowd, eager to witness their local heroes shine.

Women’s -63kg: A Clash of Titans

The -63kg women’s division witnessed a highly anticipated showdown between two formidable judokas: Japan’s Haruka KAJU, the reigning world champion, and the Netherlands’ Joanne VAN LIESHOUT, a former world champion. Both athletes had showcased exceptional groundwork (ne waza) throughout the day, setting the stage for a truly captivating final.

In the end, it was KAJU who dictated the pace of the bout, demonstrating superior control and tactical prowess to secure the gold medal. The Japanese judoka later expressed her gratitude for the electric atmosphere, noting, “The Georgian judo fans were so passionate, and even though I’m not from Georgia, I felt their incredible support, which made it easier to compete. It was fun.”

The medals were presented by Ms. Tina TRSTENJAK, the Referee Director of the International Judo Federation and an Olympic and World Champion herself.

Men’s -73kg: Valeriani’s Dominance

The men’s -73kg category saw Italy’s Leonardo VALERIANI face Finland’s Valtteri OLIN in the final. VALERIANI had been on a dominant run, delivering some of the most impressive ippons of the competition.

In the final match, VALERIANI opted to take the contest to the ground, where he expertly executed a submission hold, forcing his opponent to tap out and clinching his first-ever Grand Slam gold. A jubilant VALERIANI shared his delight, stating, “I love this place, I love Tbilisi, I love all the people in the stadium because they are so loud when they cheer, and I feel very good, yes, I like it.”

Mr. Vladimir BARTA, Head Sport Director of the International Judo Federation, had the honour of awarding VALERIANI his medal.

Women’s -70kg: Taimazova Reclaims Top Spot

For Olympic bronze medalist Madina TAIMAZOVA, the -70kg final was an opportunity to claim her fourth Grand Slam gold. With a perfectly timed and executed attack, TAIMAZOVA once again found herself at the pinnacle of the podium.

The medal ceremony for this category was conducted by Ms. Yuri ALVEAR, a member of the International Judo Federation Sport Commission and a three-time World Champion.

Men’s -81kg: Albayrak’s Home Crowd Triumph

Vedat ALBAYRAK of Turkiye returned to Tbilisi, aiming to replicate his success from the previous year where he clinched gold in the -81kg category. Fueled by the fervent cheers of the home crowd, ALBAYRAK delivered a performance worthy of a champion.

In a thrilling climax, ALBAYRAK secured his victory in the dying seconds of the final match, much to the delight of the spectators, and added another gold medal to his collection. The medals were presented by Mr. Raul CAMACHO PEREZ, Referee Director of the International Judo Federation.

The crowd erupted with joy for another home favourite, Giorgi LOLADZE, who earned a bronze medal in the -73kg category. LOLADZE provided one of the day’s most spectacular moments with a breathtaking throw, showcasing the incredible talent on display.

As day two concluded, the focus now shifts to the heavyweight divisions, promising another thrilling day of competition for the final day of the Tbilisi Grand Slam 2026. The stage is set for the big athletes to take centre stage tomorrow.
