The Resilience of Zimbabwe’s Creative Industry
Zimbabwe’s creative industry continues to thrive on passion and the unwavering support of its community, despite the numerous economic challenges faced by artists. Rising jazz outfit Kanimusic Zw has been vocal about the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity. They encourage fellow musicians not to lose hope, emphasizing that the value of art transcends financial gain.
Led by Kanizios Msonza, the Kwekwe-based music company highlights the profound impact of music as a form of healing for both performers and audiences. In a statement, the group expressed their belief that music serves as a powerful tool for spiritual connection and emotional release. “We should keep the music playing; its value is beyond what we create. Just like doctors, we are healing a lot of struggling people. As musicians, we help many reach spiritual realms,” they said.
Kanimusic Zw acknowledges that while the industry may seem thankless, it remains a vital force in uniting people and providing comfort during difficult times. “The world greatly needs our active participation in bringing people together. Music is the only ‘pill’ that treats both the one administering it and the one receiving it,” they added.
However, the band also recognizes the harsh economic realities that affect artists in Zimbabwe. Performance earnings often fall short of expectations due to the country’s challenging economic climate. “Today, the money we get for performing is far less than what we expect due to the state of the economy. Only those who understand and experience the power of music extend a helping hand for our survival and the families God blessed us with,” the group shared.
To navigate these challenges, Kanimusic Zw has diversified its operations by launching a clothing line called Kani. This brand offers smart-casual apparel and aims to reflect the group’s musical identity and values. “We have established a clothing line to celebrate the music we create and what we stand for. It’s a family brand that caters for everyone,” they said. The band is open to collaborations with sponsors, promoters, and distributors to expand their footprint.
Expanding the Brand and Creative Output
Kanimusic Zw has released 11 singles to date and is preparing to drop its 12th track, Ishe Tambirai (2026), an emotional song that seeks divine intervention and healing for the nation. The upcoming release will also serve as a joint promotional platform for both the band and its fashion brand, as they continue to build a dual business model around music and lifestyle products.
“We are strengthening both the music and fashion aspects of our brand while continuing to offer live performance services. Promotion remains a key focus area for us,” the group stated.
In addition to their musical endeavors, Kanimusic Zw encourages fellow artistes to remain committed to their craft and grow organically. “It is important to stay focused and avoid changing lanes too quickly. It may take time, but consistency will eventually pay off. Failure is part of the journey and a way to learn,” they advised.
With a growing catalogue and expanding brand, Kanimusic Zw believes that perseverance and innovation are key to sustaining a career in Zimbabwe’s evolving creative industry. Their journey exemplifies the resilience and adaptability required to thrive in a challenging environment.
