Researchers began interviewing the offspring of centenarians at Boston University in 2005, when these adult children were in their 70s. The ongoing research has now been informed by 20 years of data, with many of the participants now in their 90s. Paola Sebastiani, another author of the study, highlighted that following the offspring of centenarians for two decades has revealed that, as a group, they have experienced significantly lower risks of stroke, dementia, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

The findings suggest that the offspring of long-lived parents consume diets that are better for metabolic, heart, and brain health. When comparing the diets of these offspring with those of individuals whose parents did not live as long, researchers found a significant difference. The former consumed higher amounts of fish, fruits, and vegetables, and had lower intakes of sugar and substantially less sodium.

“These elements may represent behavioural pathways that complement or amplify inherited biological resilience,” the researchers stated. Dr. Zhao explained that it isn’t just one food or simply eating healthy that will help someone reach the 100-year-old milestone. Instead, it is a combination of environmental and genetic factors that are still being explored.
