Local Government Chairmen in Osun State Present 2026 Budget Estimates
Chairmen of three local government areas (LGAs) in Osun State have recently submitted their 2026 budget proposals to their respective councils. This move marks a significant step in the financial planning process for these regions, aiming to ensure that resources are allocated effectively to meet the needs of residents.
Ifelodun Local Government’s N6.8bn Proposal
The Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government, Hassan Okanlawon, presented the N6.8bn budget proposal to the legislators. According to a statement shared with our correspondent on Friday, this budget is designed as a strategic framework to accelerate socio-economic growth and improve living standards across the LGA.
Okanlawon emphasized that the budget prioritizes key sectors critical to grassroots development, including infrastructure development, health services, education, agriculture, social services, and empowerment programs. He highlighted that the allocations were carefully structured to address both immediate community needs and long-term developmental goals.
Egbedore Local Government’s N6.2bn Plan
The Egbedore Local Government budget proposal was laid before the legislative house by the Chairman of the council, Hissa Akinwale, at the premises of the LGA in Awo. The proposed budget, titled “Budget for Sustainable Development,” outlines plans to spend N6.2bn in the 2026 fiscal year.
Akinwale listed infrastructural development, potable water, primary health care, environmental sanitation, educational assistance, youth empowerment, agriculture, and security as core targets of the estimates. He also mentioned that the welfare of local government staff would be given special priority, including prompt payment of salaries and other entitled benefits, along with training and re-training of staff.
“The distinguished Leader of the Council and other honorable Members, let me make it clear that in arriving at the size of the 2026 Budget of 6.2 billion naira, adequate planning and necessary consultations were made to ensure that the Budget is implementable and of immense benefit to our people,” Akinwale said.
Irepodun Local Government’s N5.8bn Estimate
Similarly, the chairman of Irepodun Local Government, Adegoke Ogunsola, presented a sum of N5.8bn budget estimates for the year 2026 before the legislative house of the council. According to a statement shared with our correspondent on Saturday, Ogunsola explained that the proposal would be financed through monthly statutory revenue allocations from the Federal Allocation Account and internally generated revenue from taxable people and rates.
Ogunsola further stated, “We have proposed to appropriate ₦5,881,255,200.00 (five billion, eight hundred and eighty-one million, two hundred and fifty-five thousand, two hundred naira) in the next fiscal year, 2026. As a government, we have proposed in the budget to execute physical projects and to take care of our recurrent expenditures with transparency and fiscal discipline.”
Political Context and Presentation Process
The LG chairmen elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State have presented their 2026 estimates directly to their councillors. In contrast, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmen, elected on February 22, 2025, appeared before the Osun State House of Assembly to defend their budgets last week.
Those elected on October 15, 2022, who are all from the APC, are currently running council areas in the state and have been laying their proposed budgets before the legislative houses of their respective councils.
Key Sectors Targeted in the Budgets
Each of the three LGAs has identified several key sectors as priorities for their 2026 budgets:
- Infrastructure Development: Focused on improving roads, public buildings, and utilities.
- Health Services: Aimed at enhancing access to healthcare and improving medical facilities.
- Education: Emphasis on building schools, providing learning materials, and supporting teacher training.
- Agriculture: Support for farmers through grants, training, and improved irrigation systems.
- Social Services: Programs aimed at helping vulnerable populations, including the elderly and disabled.
- Security: Initiatives to enhance safety and reduce crime in local communities.
Conclusion
The presentation of these budget proposals reflects a commitment by local government leaders to prioritize the needs of their constituents while ensuring fiscal responsibility. With these plans in place, the focus will now shift to securing approval from the respective legislative bodies and implementing the initiatives that will drive development in Osun State.
