From Hollywood Hills to Country Calm: Tom Welling’s Pandemic Pivot to Ranch Life
The hustle and bustle of Los Angeles felt like a distant memory for actor Tom Welling as the world grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, the star, best known for his iconic role as Clark Kent in Smallville, traded the urban sprawl for the serene embrace of a small-town ranch in Northern California. This significant lifestyle shift, undertaken with his wife Jessica Rose Lee and their young son Thomas, was a deliberate pursuit of peace and a more grounded existence.
Welling, now 48, candidly described the atmosphere in Los Angeles during the early days of lockdown in a recent interview. “L.A. was wild at the time,” he recalled. “There were no cars on the street, you couldn’t go anywhere.” The abrupt halt to daily life, the eerie quiet punctuated only by the sounds of a world in lockdown, deeply impacted his family.
“People weren’t leaving their homes,” Welling explained. “Our first son was starting to crawl and we only had this tiny deck for him to play on. There was this thought of, we don’t know if we can be here anymore.” This feeling of confinement and uncertainty in a once-familiar environment spurred a reassessment of their priorities and living situation.

The decision to leave Los Angeles wasn’t a sudden impulse. Welling admitted he had long harboured thoughts of relocating away from the city. However, a visit to family in Northern California, which included a serendipitous encounter with a captivating ranch, accelerated his timeline. The appeal of open spaces and a slower pace of life became irresistible.
The Allure of the Small Town

The rewards of embracing a quieter, more rural existence have been manifold for Welling and his family. “No one bothers you in a small town,” he observed. “Everyone’s famous in a small town.” This sentiment points to a different kind of community, one where familiarity and local connections foster a sense of belonging rather than the often-intrusive nature of celebrity in a major metropolis.
Life on the ranch offers a refreshing simplicity. While Welling continues to engage with acting projects, including an upcoming comedy titled Chasing Summer slated for its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, he finds deep satisfaction in his current down-to-earth lifestyle. His wife, Jessica Rose Lee, actively contributes to the ranch’s ambiance by running a horse-breeding business, further embedding them in the rural fabric.

“It’s peaceful,” Welling stated, his voice conveying a sense of genuine contentment. “And it feels real.” This feeling of authenticity is a stark contrast to the often-manufactured realities of Hollywood.
His perspective on life has undergone a profound evolution. “When I was younger, I was always looking for the next big thing,” he shared. “Now, I just want to be where my feet are.” This shift reflects a mature appreciation for the present moment and a redefinition of success, moving away from external validation towards internal peace.
Family Life and a New Chapter
The couple, who exchanged vows in 2019, have expanded their family, welcoming their second son, Rocklin, in June 2021. This new addition has undoubtedly enriched their ranch life. Welling was previously married to model Jamie White from 2002 to 2015.

While Welling has successfully carved out a more tranquil existence away from the spotlight of Los Angeles, his journey has not been entirely without its complexities. In January 2025, he was reportedly arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in a Yreka, California Arby’s parking lot. The charges were subsequently dismissed in May 2025, and he entered a plea of not guilty to a lesser charge. This resolution resulted in a period of probation, the imposition of fines, and the requirement to complete a DUI program. Despite this legal challenge, Welling appears committed to his new chapter, prioritising his family and his peaceful ranch life.
