Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of the franchise’s second feature film, had already floated the idea of a new Top Gun to Tom Cruise a few years ago. However, due to the actor’s particularly busy schedule—he was involved in several major projects—development of the film had been put on hold. At the time, Cruise’s professional priorities—particularly those related to the Mission: Impossible franchise and other major productions—made it difficult to make concrete progress on the project. Bruckheimer nevertheless remained interested, convinced of the potential to continue the story. Today, with a more favorable climate and renewed interest in the franchise, this long-stalled idea finally seems to be coming to fruition, opening the door to a new chapter eagerly awaited by fans.
“We pitched a script to Tom that he liked,” Bruckheimer told People in 2024. “But he’s a very busy actor and has a lot of movies lined up, so we’ll have to wait and see.”
And in 2025, Tom Cruise first spoke publicly about the project on the Australian talk show Today.
“Yes, we’re thinking about and discussing a lot of different stories, what we could do and what’s possible,” he said. “It took me 35 years to get Top Gun: Maverick off the ground, so among all the projects we’re working on, we’re also talking about Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick.”
