Unusual Horse and Cart Activity at Windsor Castle
A group of horse and cart enthusiasts recently caused a stir at Windsor Castle by defying the rules that prohibit animals from the Long Walk. The event, which took place on a sunny Saturday, saw participants riding their horses and carts just yards away from the iconic royal residence.
The Windsor Horse Drive, an annual event in Berkshire, attracted families who gathered for a 13-mile ride. The journey included convenient stops at local pubs, making it a popular choice for those looking to enjoy a day out in the countryside. However, some of the attendees decided to take a different route, venturing onto the royal estate and approaching the castle itself.
This deviation was a clear violation of the rules that strictly regulate access to the Long Walk. The area is typically reserved for pedestrians only, with bikes, scooters, and roller blades all banned. Horseriding on the Windsor estate is also highly controlled, and the castle approach is off-limits to riders.
Those wishing to ride horses on the estate must hold an annual membership, which costs £395, and are required to stick to designated trails. Despite these restrictions, the event saw horse and carts in the usually pedestrianised zone, with the animals encroaching on both the main path and the well-maintained grass surrounding the castle.
Photos captured the surprise of passersby as they were caught off guard by the sudden arrival of the caravan of trailers. 
At least two groups entered the Long Walk itself before heading onto nearby grass, with some carts carrying as many as three people at a time. This unusual activity occurred on a busy day for the royal estate, as visitors took advantage of the pleasant weather to enjoy the outdoors.
The only carts allowed in the area are those belonging to the Windsor Great Park. Visitors can book a ride down the Long Walk in a regal carriage drawn by two horses. This experience includes unique photo opportunities, a chance to meet the horses, and panoramic views of the castle.
A similar event was held at Windsor last year, but there were no reports of carts entering the park itself during that occasion. The recent incident has raised questions about the enforcement of the rules and the need for greater awareness among visitors about the restrictions in place.
While the event provided a memorable experience for those involved, it also highlighted the importance of respecting the regulations that protect the historic site. As the royal estate continues to attract visitors, ensuring compliance with these rules will be essential to preserving its beauty and historical significance.
