NFL International Matchup to Air in Melbourne
The National Football League (NFL) has confirmed that the week one matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams will be aired in Melbourne. A source familiar with the decision shared this information with The Associated Press, though the official NFL schedule has not yet been finalized.
This game will air in primetime in the United States on Thursday night. Due to the time difference, it will kick off at 10:35 am on Friday in Australia. Melbourne is 14 hours ahead of New York and 17 hours ahead of Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Key Details About the Game
The match between the NFC West rivals is one of nine international games the NFL will play during the upcoming season, marking the first such event in Australia.
Reigning AP NFL MVP Matthew Stafford and the Rams will be the home team for this game. This follows a split in the season series between Stafford and the 49ers’ quarterback, Brock Purdy, last season.
Other International Games and Schedule Updates
The NFL has already announced the kick-off game for the season, where the Seattle Seahawks will defend their Super Bowl title. This game is scheduled for September 9, but the opponent has not yet been revealed.
There is speculation that the NFL could choose an immediate rematch of Super Bowl 60, as New England is set to visit Seattle. Last season, the Super Bowl 59 rematch between Philadelphia and Kansas City took place in week two.
This will be the second time the NFL season opens on a Wednesday. In 2012, the New York Giants hosted the Dallas Cowboys due to a scheduling conflict with President Barack Obama’s speech on the final night of the Democratic National Convention.
The NFL is still finalizing its schedule, but it is expected to be announced next week. League officials hope to complete the process by the weekend, as network upfronts begin on Monday.
Upfronts and Advertising Opportunities
Typically, networks announce one of their showcase games during upfronts to attract advertisers. Netflix, which has aired games on Christmas Day for the past two seasons, may also be involved in games on the night before Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. The streaming platform is also set to broadcast two games on Christmas again this year.
What to Expect in the Upcoming Season
As the NFL continues to expand its global reach, more games are being scheduled outside the United States. This move to Melbourne highlights the league’s growing interest in international markets and fan engagement.
With the schedule still in development, fans can expect more updates in the coming weeks. The NFL aims to provide clarity so that viewers can plan accordingly for the upcoming season.
