Tyra Banks’ Emotional ANTM Revelation: Co-Director Shares Untold Story

Unpacking the Controversial Legacy of ‘America’s Next Top Model’ in New Netflix Documentary

A new Netflix documentary is forcing a long overdue look at the complicated and often controversial legacy of America’s Next Top Model (ANTM). The film, titled Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, delves deep into the hit reality show’s most talked-about moments and the behind-the-scenes culture that shaped its narrative, while also examining its profound impact on both the fashion industry and the landscape of reality television.

The documentary aims to dissect how ANTM, which ran from 2003 to 2018, influenced popular culture and the modelling world. However, it doesn’t shy away from the significant criticism the series garnered over its years for its treatment of contestants, often pushing them to their emotional limits in the pursuit of dramatic television.

Tyra Banks’s Role and the Filmmakers’ Approach

Despite being the iconic face and driving force behind America’s Next Top Model, lead host Tyra Banks reportedly had no creative input into the making of this new documentary. According to co-director Daniel Sivan, the filmmakers presented the project to Banks and her team, and she agreed to participate without any stipulations on how her segment would be edited or presented. “There was no creative control,” Sivan told Page Six. “Tyra is going to see the [documentary] exactly like all the 270 million households [that subscribe to Netflix].”

Banks, 52, engages in a series of interviews within the documentary, marking her first public reflection on the show since its conclusion in 2018. Co-director Mor Loushy described the process of securing her participation as a lengthy one, taking “several months” of conversations before Banks felt ready to open up.

“Tyra decided that it’s time for her to speak up,” Loushy explained. The filmmaking duo admitted they were uncertain about what to expect from the interview. “We didn’t know what to expect. We came, and she was very emotional. She wanted to tell her side of the story, like the contestants are telling their side of the story.”

The documentary features a comprehensive cast of voices, including executive producer Ken Mok and former judges J. Alexander, Jay Manuel, and Nigel Barker. Crucially, it also gives a platform to numerous past contestants, such as Shandi Sullivan, Dani Evans, Whitney Thompson, Ebony Haith, and Giselle Samson, allowing them to share their experiences and perspectives.

Contestants Find Their Voice

Since its inception, ANTM has faced increasing scrutiny over its more controversial elements. These include challenges that often pushed contestants to their breaking points, critiques focused heavily on their bodies and appearances, and photoshoots that involved problematic portrayals of different races or staged crime scenarios.

Sivan believes that the passage of time has provided a crucial space for reflection, enabling participants to speak more openly and honestly about their experiences. “I think everybody came to tell their story,” he stated, observing that those involved were in “a place where they accepted the good and the bad that they did.” He was keen to dismiss any notion that participants were solely engaged in damage control or image repair. “People were here to say, ‘Hey, this is me, and this is what made me do these things,'” Sivan clarified.

A Call for Discussion and Accountability

Ultimately, the filmmakers behind Reality Check express a strong desire for the documentary to spark widespread conversation and debate among viewers regarding the ethics of reality television and the prevailing standards within the entertainment industry.

“We want people to be angry and also to love this [doc] and we want them to debate it with each other,” Sivan articulated. “We want people to keep the discussion going… about body images today, about sexual harassment, about boundaries, about when do you need to put down the camera and scream, ‘cut!'”

The documentary serves as a critical examination, urging audiences to reconsider the impact of reality TV and the responsibilities that come with producing such content. By revisiting the highs and lows of ANTM, Reality Check aims to foster a more mindful approach to entertainment and encourage greater accountability within the industry.
