The Great British staycation has seen a significant increase in popularity over recent years, largely due to the impact of the pandemic and the rising costs of travel. As more people look for affordable and accessible holiday options, this trend is expected to continue growing. With concerns about jet fuel shortages and flight cancellations on the rise, many Brits are choosing to explore destinations closer to home.
This shift comes after an aviation expert warned that hundreds of thousands of flights could be canceled worldwide if the jet fuel crisis persists. Two of Europe’s largest airlines have already had to cancel flights due to soaring fuel costs, which have been exacerbated by the conflict in Iran. This situation has led to increased interest in domestic travel, with more UK holidaymakers opting for local trips.
Paul Charles, CEO of travel consultancy The PC Agency, stated that these concerns may lead to more UK travelers choosing domestic destinations, which would be beneficial for the staycation market. He also mentioned that there are already signs of UK hotels and other accommodations being heavily booked for the May to October period.

Despite growing up near St Albans, Sopwell House in Hertfordshire feels like a dreamy escape. My husband and I stayed there the night after our wedding before heading to Italy for our honeymoon. Traveling by train in Scotland is an excellent way to explore the country. Starting in Aberdeen, the Caledonian Sleeper offers an overnight service from Euston. From there, you can head to Inverness, the Far North Line to Thurso, or take a ferry to the Isle of Skye. This route offers breathtaking views of moorland and hills, making it a perfect way to experience Scotland’s natural beauty.
