US Flag Football Stuns Brady, NFL Stars, Logan Paul

Team USA Dominates Fanatics Flag Football Classic, Humbling NFL Stars and Logan Paul

The inaugural Fanatics Flag Football Classic held in Los Angeles delivered a surprising and humbling spectacle, with the unheralded Team USA emerging victorious over squads featuring NFL luminaries like Tom Brady and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, as well as WWE personality Logan Paul. The event, which was recently relocated from Saudi Arabia due to geopolitical concerns, had been amplified by a vocal pre-tournament exchange between Paul and Brady. Brady’s initial dismissal of Paul’s wrestling career as “cute” and “scripted” was met with a confident retort from Paul, who declared, “WWE can’t stop me from kicking your ass on that field.” However, this verbal sparring seemingly overshadowed the true contenders, Team USA, who clinched the tournament title without a single NFL player on their roster.

The American national team kicked off their dominance by decisively defeating Paul’s Wildcats with a score of 39-14. They then went on to dismantle Brady’s Founders team, 43-16. In a rematch of the opening game, Team USA secured the championship by beating the Wildcats once more, 24-14, in the final.

Brady’s Fleeting Moments of Brilliance

Despite the overall team struggles, Tom Brady, at 48 years old, showcased glimpses of his legendary prowess. In the second game of the day, he demonstrated his agility by evading a pass rusher before connecting with receiver Stefon Diggs in the back of the end zone for his team’s first points. Adding to the nostalgic moment, Brady then found his former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers teammate, Rob Gronkowski, for a successful two-point conversion.

Unfortunately for Gronkowski, his participation was cut short as he pulled his hamstring on the catch, forcing him out for the remainder of the day. Later, Brady engaged in a light-hearted moment with Logan Paul, executing his own version of the “Philly Special.” He caught a pass over the WWE star and playfully tossed the ball into Paul’s chest after securing it.

Logan Paul and Joe Burrow’s Struggles Against Team USA

Logan Paul also found himself in challenging situations throughout the tournament. On the Wildcats’ opening drive against Team USA, it was Paul who failed to make a crucial tackle at the goal line. He further compounded his team’s difficulties by incurring a penalty for aggressively ripping off a rival’s sunglasses and throwing them to the ground.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow also experienced an embarrassing moment at the hands of Team USA. After receiving a pitch from teammate Jayden Daniels, Burrow attempted a pass back to the Commanders quarterback, only to see it intercepted and returned for a touchdown – a “pick-six” – on the very same play.

Team USA’s impressive performance was evident from the outset of their games. Without the benefit of NFL stars, they established a commanding 32-14 lead against the Wildcats by scoring on their first four possessions, ultimately leading to their convincing 39-14 victory. This momentum carried over into their match against Brady’s Founders, where they secured another dominant win, 43-16.

“My heart is really hurting right now,” Brady admitted between games, reflecting on his team’s disappointing performance.

NFL Stars Grapple with Flag Football Nuances

The clear disparity in skill and understanding between the NFL players and Team USA highlighted the learning curve involved in adapting to flag football. The NFL contingent, comprised of seasoned professionals, had only managed a couple of practices prior to the 5-on-5 tournament. This lack of familiarity with the sport’s intricacies led to a high number of penalties, with some teams accumulating more infractions than successful flag pulls. Team USA’s superior knowledge of the game, sophisticated offensive strategies, and overall speed proved overwhelming for a group of players who had barely practiced together.

Tom Brady himself was penalized for tossing his flag to the ground in frustration when he couldn’t quickly reinsert it before a hurried snap. Coach Sean Payton also expressed his displeasure with an official’s call, which was initially stated as third down on the sideline before being switched to fourth down just before the snap.

With flag football slated to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, many NFL players have expressed their desire to compete for a gold medal. However, Darrell ‘Housh’ Doucette III, Nico Casares, and the rest of the USA squad have made a compelling case for their inclusion, proving themselves to be the current kings of flag football.

The Road to the Olympics and Doucette’s Bold Claim

The Fanatics Flag Football Classic was originally scheduled to be held at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but was relocated to the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles due to the ongoing conflict in Iran.

Brady’s team also featured a strong lineup including Ashton Jeanty, Alvin Kamara, Antoine Winfield Jr., DeVonta Smith, Von Miller, Damar Hamlin, Patrick Peterson, and boxer Terence Crawford. Burrow’s team, coached by Kyle Shanahan, included players like Kyle Juszczyk, Odell Beckham Jr., Davante Adams, DeAndre Hopkins, Derwin James Jr., Luke Kuechly, and Jalen Ramsey, alongside entertainer and boxer Logan Paul and YouTuber IShowSpeed.

The members of the American national team have been vocal advocates for representing the United States in the 2028 Summer Games, where flag football will make its Olympic debut. Following their decisive victory over a team packed with NFL stars, their argument for inclusion is difficult to ignore.

Back in August 2024, around the time of the Paris Olympics, flag football quarterback Darrell ‘Housh’ Doucette III made a bold statement, claiming he was superior to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the realm of flag football.

“At the end of the day, I feel like I’m better than Patrick Mahomes because of my IQ of the game,” Doucette told TMZ. “I know he’s right now the best in the [NFL]. I know he’s more accurate. I know he has all these intangibles. But when it comes to flag football, I feel like I know more than him.” He further elaborated, “I’m not saying I’m a better player overall but until he steps on a 5v5 flag field, I’m going to feel that way until it’s proven otherwise! I’m a competitor and need to be proven wrong.”

The sentiment appears to be gaining traction, with some NFL stars acknowledging Team USA’s prowess. Green Bay Packers star Micah Parsons tweeted after the event, “Team USA giving us belt [crying emojis] I guess they will be in the Olympics lol.”

The speed, skill, and strategic understanding demonstrated by the flag football players proved to be the decisive factors in the exhibition game. NFL stars struggled to grasp the rules and the distinct nuances of this faster-paced style of play, leading to numerous errors, such as the Wildcats incurring multiple illegal contact penalties.

One of the few offensive highlights for the Wildcats came from Odell Beckham Jr., who made a spectacular one-handed catch for a two-point conversion, evoking memories of his iconic rookie grab in 2014.
