Vale Tom Noonan: Tributes Flow for ’80s & ’90s Icon

Hollywood Mourns Loss of Acclaimed Actor Tom Noonan

The Australian film and television landscape, along with the wider international entertainment industry, is mourning the passing of veteran American actor Tom Noonan, who died at the age of 74. Noonan leaves behind a rich and diverse filmography, marked by memorable roles in a string of critically acclaimed and popular films.

News of Noonan’s death was shared by director Fred Dekker, who collaborated with the late actor on the beloved 1987 cult classic, The Monster Squad. In a heartfelt tribute posted on Facebook, Dekker expressed his profound sadness.

“It’s with great sadness that I share the passing of Tom Noonan,” Dekker wrote. “Tom’s indelible performance as Frankenstein in THE MONSTER SQUAD is a highlight of my modest filmography, doubtless aided by the masterful make-up designed by Stan Winston, sculpted by Tom Woodruff Jr., and applied by Zoltan Elek.”

Noonan’s portrayal of Frankenstein’s Monster in The Monster Squad remains a standout performance for many fans. However, his career extended far beyond this iconic role, with his talent gracing the screen across the 1980s, 1990s, and well into more recent years.

Dekker recounted his initial desire to cast Noonan in The Monster Squad, admitting he felt it was a long shot. “Having been knocked out by his performance as Francis Dollarhyde in Michael Mann’s MANHUNTER, I desperately wanted Tom to read the script and consider the part, but I knew that nabbing him was probably a long shot. Nonetheless, he agreed to meet me at his Hollywood apartment to discuss the role.”

The director also shared a humorous anecdote from the set of The Monster Squad, recalling how Noonan once drove home still in his full Frankenstein monster makeup. This anecdote, while lighthearted, underscored the dedication and unique spirit Noonan brought to his craft.

“But all in all, he was the proverbial gentleman and scholar, and the world has lost a great talent. R.I.P. Tom. Thanks for the great work,” Dekker concluded, encapsulating the respect and admiration felt by those who knew and worked with him.

Tributes have flooded in from fans and peers alike, reflecting the significant impact Noonan had on the industry. Underneath Dekker’s post, one fan aptly described him as “What an utter legend.”
