A Chilling Farewell: James Van Der Beek’s Final Performance Teased in “The Gates” Trailer
Fans of the late James Van Der Beek have been deeply moved by the release of a suspenseful new trailer for the upcoming thriller, The Gates. The film marks one of the actor’s final on-screen appearances, a poignant reminder of his talent and the void left by his passing. Van Der Beek, beloved for his iconic role as Dawson Leery in Dawson’s Creek, died at the age of 48 on February 11, following a courageous battle with stage three colorectal cancer. His death was confirmed by his family, who shared the heartbreaking news on social media.
In The Gates, Van Der Beek takes on the role of Jacob, a seemingly devout pastor who is, in fact, the chilling antagonist of the film. This villainous portrayal is understood to be one of his last significant projects in Hollywood, adding an extra layer of emotional weight for viewers. The film is slated for release in select cinemas on March 13.
The trailer opens with a seemingly innocent night out for a group of friends, portrayed by Mason Gooding, Algee Smith, and Keith Powers. Seeking to avoid highway traffic, their journey takes an unexpected turn into a secluded, gated neighbourhood. It’s here that their evening descends into terror as they witness a murder, committed by Van Der Beek’s character, Jacob. This shocking event ignites a desperate game of cat and mouse as the friends find themselves trapped and pursued within the confines of the exclusive community.

The narrative unfolds as the friends seek refuge inside a resident’s home, played by Brad Leland. Upon explaining their harrowing predicament, Leland reveals a shocking truth: “That is Jacob, my pastor.” The revelation is underscored by Leland producing a firearm, confirming the friends’ desperate claims.
The trailer then shifts focus to Van Der Beek, whose voiceover ominously declares, “I have been called upon to lead this community.” He is later seen in a tense conversation with Leland, expressing a chilling sentiment: “Those boys seek to destroy us.” The palpable fear of the protagonists is evident as one friend whispers, “We have to get to the police before that guy does,” met with the desperate retort, “They’re not gonna believe us in a place like this!” The sinister undertone of Van Der Beek’s character escalates with his chilling voiceover: “You understand now inside these gates, I’m God.”
The trailer culminates in a stark and disturbing image: Van Der Beek, seated with fake blood splattered across his face, clutching a gun. A confrontation ensues as one of the friends declares, “I saw you!” to which Van Der Beek chillingly replies, “No. You’ve seen what happens when people get in my way.”

The trailer’s release on Wednesday prompted an outpouring of emotion from fans across social media platforms. The comment sections were flooded with tributes and reflections on Van Der Beek’s final performance.

The official synopsis for The Gates describes a terrifying ordeal: “Three friends’ road trip turns terrifying when they witness a murder in a gated community. Trapped inside, hunted by residents who blame them, their bond fractures as a charismatic yet sinister patriarch closes in.”
Director John Burr spoke movingly about his experience working with Van Der Beek. In a statement, Burr extended his deepest sympathies to Van Der Beek’s family, including his wife Kimberly and their six children. He expressed gratitude for the “precious time” they had with the actor.
Burr described the cast and crew as “fortunate” to have collaborated with Van Der Beek, highlighting his immense experience and the profound relationships he forged on set. He noted the stark contrast between Van Der Beek’s on-screen persona as the “flawed, amoral antagonist” and his off-screen demeanour. “Between scenes he effortlessly morphed back into the grounded, charming conversationalist he was at his core,” Burr recalled.

Burr also shared that recent message exchanges with Van Der Beek were filled with “energy and punctuated with exclamation points even as his health must have been in decline,” a testament to the actor’s indomitable spirit.
Trenton Rostedt, Van Der Beek’s stunt double on The Gates, also shared insights into working with the actor. He told the Daily Mail that Van Der Beek showed no outward signs of his illness during filming in October 2024, and it appeared he might have been in remission at the time. Rostedt observed that while Van Der Beek had become leaner, he didn’t appear sickly and maintained a “friendly and good disposition.” He also noted that Van Der Beek was adhering to a specific diet to “keep things lean and healthy,” and believed the actor had undergone treatments and was recovering. Crucially, Rostedt stated that Van Der Beek never indicated that The Gates would be his final role, saying, “He didn’t say he was done.”

Beyond The Gates, Van Der Beek had also taken on the role of Dean Wilson, a mayoral candidate and school district superintendent, in the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle. He filmed scenes for this supporting role last year in May. The Amazon Prime Video series is scheduled for release on July 1, 2026.
Van Der Beek’s legacy is cemented by his six-season run as Dawson Leery in the beloved teen drama Dawson’s Creek (1998-2003), where he starred alongside a cast that included Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, Busy Philipps, Chad Michael Murray, and Michelle Williams. His extensive filmography also features notable roles in Varsity Blues (1999), The Rules Of Attraction (2002), and a memorable guest appearance in How I Met Your Mother.

The confirmation of Van Der Beek’s death came last week via a heartfelt social media post from his family. The statement read: “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
He is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children: Olivia (15), Joshua (13), Annabel (12), Emilia (9), Gwendolyn (7), and Jeremiah (4). James Van Der Beek publicly announced his stage three colorectal cancer diagnosis in November 2024.
