Tragic Secondary Collision Claims Lives on West Coast Expressway
A devastating secondary accident on the West Coast Expressway has resulted in the tragic loss of two lives and left nine others injured, including emergency personnel. The incident unfolded in the early hours of the 4th, when a vehicle collided with an existing accident cleanup site, plunging responders into a perilous situation.
The initial event, a rear-end collision involving passenger vehicles, was reported at approximately 1:23 a.m. on the northbound lane of the West Coast Expressway, specifically at the 73-kilometer mark in Goseong-myeon, Gochang-gun, North Jeolla Province, heading towards Seoul. Following the report, highway patrol units, emergency medical teams from the 119 service, and tow trucks were promptly dispatched to manage the scene and assist those involved.
It was during this critical phase of accident response that a catastrophic secondary collision occurred. An SUV, reportedly traveling at speed, plowed into the already established accident scene. The impact struck parked vehicles, vehicles undergoing towing, and, most tragically, the personnel actively engaged in traffic control and rescue operations.
Fatalities and Injuries in the Devastating Chain Reaction
The immediate aftermath of the SUV’s impact was grim. Officer A, a highway patrol officer in his 50s, and Mr. B, a tow truck driver in his 30s, both of whom were on duty at the site, succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Their dedication to public service, tragically cut short while ensuring the safety of others, has sent shockwaves through the community.
Further compounding the tragedy, a paramedic in his 40s, who was part of the emergency response team, sustained severe injuries. He is currently receiving intensive medical treatment at a local hospital.
In addition to the fatalities and critical injuries, a total of eight individuals suffered minor injuries. These included the drivers of the vehicles involved in the initial collision, another paramedic, and a family of five traveling in a GV80, which was identified as the vehicle that initiated the secondary accident.
The force of the collision also resulted in significant property damage. The fire department estimated the financial impact at approximately 7 million Korean won. One passenger vehicle was completely engulfed in flames, a stark visual reminder of the destructive power of the incident. The scale of the emergency response was substantial, with 22 vehicles, including a fire helicopter, and a combined force of 63 fire and police personnel deployed to manage the multifaceted disaster.
Ongoing Investigation into the Cause
Authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the precise circumstances that led to this tragic event. Key areas of inquiry include:
- Driver Awareness: Investigators are examining whether the driver of the SUV failed to notice the illuminated accident scene on the darkened highway.
- Forward Observation: The investigation will scrutinize the driver’s adherence to maintaining a proper lookout for potential hazards ahead.
- Speeding: The possibility of excessive speed being a contributing factor to the accident is also under active review.
The findings of this investigation will be crucial in understanding how such a devastating secondary accident could occur and in implementing measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers faced by first responders and the importance of extreme caution when approaching accident scenes on roadways.
