The upcoming season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has already seen a significant disruption for the defending champions, Lahore Qalandars. West Indies left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie has been forced to withdraw from the tournament, casting a shadow over the team’s preparations as they aim to retain their title.
Motie, who was contracted by the Lahore Qalandars for the latest edition of the league, has announced his unavailability after recently returning to his home country from India. This withdrawal comes at a critical juncture, with teams in the process of finalising their squads ahead of the competition’s commencement later this month.
The West Indies squad found themselves in a challenging situation in Kolkata following their defeat in the T20 World Cup on March 1st. A combination of cancelled and delayed flights, exacerbated by airspace restrictions stemming from the West Asia crisis, meant that many Caribbean players experienced considerable delays in their return to their respective homes. It was only in the past few days that the majority of these players were able to travel back.
Gudakesh Motie was an integral part of the West Indies touring party to the subcontinent and returned with his teammates. However, upon reaching his homeland, he made the decision to pull out of the upcoming PSL tournament.
Gudakesh Motie’s Withdrawal Amidst Travel Chaos
Motie’s unavailability presents an unwelcome challenge for the Lahore Qalandars. The team had identified the West Indian as a valuable asset for bowling during the middle overs of T20 matches, a crucial phase in the game. As an all-rounder, Motie is a key component of the West Indies national team, having recently featured prominently in their World Cup campaign. His selection for the PSL was made during this period, highlighting his perceived importance to the Qalandars’ strategy.
The widespread flight disruptions are likely to be a cause for concern for other Caribbean internationals who have been selected to participate in this year’s T20 tournament. However, Motie is currently the only player who was selected during the World Cup to have withdrawn from the competition as a direct consequence of these travel complications.
Dunith Wellalage Set to Join Lahore Qalandars
In response to Motie’s withdrawal, the Lahore Qalandars are reportedly moving swiftly to secure a replacement. Sri Lankan all-rounder Dunith Wellalage is expected to join the team, bolstering their squad with his all-round capabilities. The 23-year-old impressed with his bowling during the recently concluded T20 World Cup, taking 8 wickets at an economy rate of 7.22 over 35 overs. His bowling average at the event was notably more impressive than Motie’s.
Beyond his bowling prowess, Wellalage also possesses strong batting skills, making him a potentially valuable addition to the Lahore outfit’s middle order. This signing will see him join his current T20I captain, Dasun Shanaka, in the Lahore ranks. Shanaka had previously been signed by the franchise during the earlier PSL auction.
The PSL is scheduled to commence on March 26th. The Lahore Qalandars are slated to play the opening match against the newly inducted franchise, Hyderabad Kingsmen. The team will be hoping that the addition of Wellalage, another capable all-rounder, will prove to be a beneficial move as they embark on their title defence. The tournament’s opening ceremony and the subsequent matches will be keenly watched by fans eager to see how the teams have adapted to pre-season challenges and strengthened their rosters. The early disruption experienced by the defending champions adds an element of intrigue to the early stages of the competition.
