Whoopi Goldberg Addresses Epstein Files Mention: A Clarification of Circumstance
During a recent episode of the popular talk show The View, co-host Whoopi Goldberg took the opportunity to directly address the inclusion of her name in the recently unsealed Jeffrey Epstein files. Amidst swirling rumours and speculation, Goldberg aimed to provide clarity and dispel any misconceptions about her connection to the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender.
Putting the document on display for the studio audience and viewers at home, the 70-year-old comedian and actress explained the precise context of her name’s appearance. Goldberg was emphatic in her denial of any personal or romantic association with Epstein, stating, “I wasn’t his girlfriend, I wasn’t his friend.”
Decoding the Document: An Invitation, Not an Endorsement
Goldberg proceeded to read directly from an email exchange dated May 2013. The correspondence appeared to show Epstein responding to an invitation to offer his private aircraft for use. The email, as read by Goldberg, stated: “Whoopi needs a plane to get to Monaco. John Lennon’s charity is paying for it. It should say Julian Lennon’s Charity. They don’t want to charter, so they are looking for private owners. Here’s the info,” followed by details about the aircraft, including an offer to use his “G2.”

Fellow co-host Sunny Hostin chimed in, noting that the response within the email chain indicated a polite refusal: “And it looks like they said: ‘No thanks’.” This observation was echoed by Joy Behar, who questioned the breadth of names appearing in such lists, remarking, “So in other words anybody can be on this list?”
Goldberg affirmed that this was precisely her point. She elaborated on her stance, highlighting the importance of factual accuracy, particularly in past eras. “I was not only too old but it was at a time… you used to have to have facts before you said stuff,” she explained, expressing frustration at “getting dragged” and the belief that some people genuinely thought she had a relationship with Epstein.
The Public Record and a Fear of Flying
The veteran entertainer further asserted that any significant relationships in her life have been public knowledge. “People wrote about this stuff,” she stated, implying that if there had been any association with Epstein, it would have been widely reported.

Returning to the specifics of the email, Goldberg confirmed that she never actually took Epstein up on the offer to use his plane. She posed a rhetorical question to her co-hosts: “And no, I didn’t get on the plane. ‘Cause, you know what I would have to do to get on the plane?” Behar’s quick-witted response, “Fly,” alluded to Goldberg’s well-documented fear of flying, providing a humorous yet significant reason for declining the offer.
The Epstein Files: A Broader Context
The release of the Epstein files has brought to light the names of numerous prominent individuals, including celebrities, political figures, and members of royal families. It is crucial to understand that the mere appearance of a name within these documents does not inherently signify any wrongdoing.
Co-host Sara Haines provided further context, explaining some of the common reasons why an individual’s name might surface in such a compilation. These can include being mentioned in news articles, appearing in third-party email communications, or simply being listed as a contact. This broader perspective underscores that inclusion in the files is often a reflection of social circles and information exchanges rather than direct involvement in Epstein’s criminal activities.
