Why Dragon’s Den star earns over £37m but still flies Ryanair

The Unexpected Choice of a Dragon

Becoming an investor on Dragons’ Den is certainly no small feat. Over the years, the BBC series has seen the likes of Deborah Meaden, Peter Jones, Touker Suleyman, Steven Bartlett and Gary Neville throw thousands of pounds at different business proposals. However, for former Dragon Sara Davies, who is worth a whopping £37 million, she has revealed how she still chooses to fly Ryanair.

The 41-year-old businessman joined the Dragons’ Den panel in 2019 before stepping away last year. Speaking to Woman And Home for their June cover issue, she said: “At an airport, I once overheard someone say, ‘That’s Sara Davies, that Dragon’, and someone replied, ‘It’s not. There’s only Ryanair flights leaving. She’s probably got a private jet’.”

“We were travelling to Spain and I could have afforded a private jet, but I don’t want my kids thinking we can fly that way when the Benidorm bus works just fine.”

She added: “I think, ‘How do I bring up my kids in the same way and instil the right values when I’m in a really different place to where my parents were?’ My mam had me working in our family shop from the age of five, polishing and hoovering, so in the holidays the boys help out in my sister’s business, tidying wallpaper samples, like I used to. They work hard for their pocket money.”

A Life Defined by Net Worth

Have you heard of this Dragons’ Den success story? Earlier this year, Sara told how she has always been defined by her net-worth and it “upsets her”. She said: “It really used to upset me that when I used to Google myself, just to see what people are looking for. It was always ‘Sara Davies net-worth’.”

Discussing her exit from Dragons’ Den, which many thought was a controversial move, she added that one day she would love to appear on the show again.

She explained: “I spoke to the Dragons’ Den producers, and just said, ‘I can’t commit to this season.’ It’s not the filming commitment, it’s ending up with potentially a dozen new businesses.”

“I’d love to say that someday I’ll be able to do some more Dragons’ Den again, because I absolutely love it and it’s who I am. But it was a, it’s just too big a commitment to commit to.”

This comes after the show’s biggest ever success story revealed his one “deep regret” that he still has. Levi Roots, who appeared on the show in 2007 securing a £50,000 investment for his signature Reggae Reggae sauce, is today worth a reported £30 million. However, the closing of one of his beloved restaurants in London still haunts him today.
