A Rare Case of Quadruplets in Tanzania
In a remarkable medical event, a 28-year-old mother from Newland TPC in the Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania has given birth to four premature babies at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC). This rare occurrence has been described by medical professionals as an extraordinary case.
Ms. Rachael Simba delivered the babies via caesarean section on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. She was initially told she was carrying triplets, but the situation changed dramatically on the day of delivery. Ms. Simba shared her experience with a local newspaper, expressing her surprise and gratitude for the safe outcome.
The Journey Through Pregnancy
Ms. Simba’s pregnancy began in September 2025 and was marked by several challenges. She was advised to rest from the third month onward. At six months into her pregnancy, she was told she was carrying twins, which later was confirmed as triplets. However, the true nature of her condition was only revealed on the day of delivery.
On that day, she arrived at the clinic without any signs of labor, but soon experienced sudden pain and was rushed to the operating theatre. It was there that doctors discovered she had four babies. “I was shocked but thankful that I and all my babies survived safely,” she said.
Challenges and Medical Care
Due to the complexity of her pregnancy, Ms. Simba was unable to carry out normal activities, including walking and standing without assistance. She now has five children in total, including her first-born son who is two-and-a-half years old. The newborns consist of one boy and three girls.
The medical team at KCMC noted that the babies are in good condition under special care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) due to their low birth weight. The mother has appealed for public support to cover the high medical costs, including oxygen, lung maturity drugs, milk, and tests. She mentioned that the babies may remain hospitalized for over a month, depending on their progress.
Medical Insights and Statistics
Dr. Gedion Edward, an obstetrician and gynaecologist at KCMC, explained that Ms. Simba was admitted on April 22, 2026, at 31 weeks and two days of pregnancy after presenting with mild abdominal pain. Initial tests, including blood, urine, and ultrasound scans, showed she was carrying more than two babies, a rare condition in natural conception.
“Further examination showed high-risk indicators, so she was admitted for close monitoring before surgery,” he said. Dr. Edward added that the hospital records about one or two cases annually of mothers delivering more than three babies, while most give birth to single babies or twins.
He also noted that the chance of a woman carrying quadruplets is estimated at one in 6,000. Such pregnancies may result from multiple egg fertilization or a single fertilised egg splitting.
Unique Developmental Conditions
The babies were born with different developmental conditions, with two sharing one sac and the others in separate sacs. Two baby girls sharing one sac each weighed one kilogramme, while the baby boy weighed 1.6 kilogrammes and the other girl 1.3 kilogrammes.
Nurse Secilia Jonathan, who was on duty at the maternity ward on April 22, 2026, shared her account of the events. She said she received the mother already in pain and under observation. “She had already started labour, and on examination the cervix was three centimetres dilated. We informed the doctor because at our zonal hospital, mothers with more than twins are delivered by caesarean section,” she said.
It was during the preparation for surgery that it was discovered the mother was carrying four babies instead of three. Nurse Jonathan advised pregnant women to attend clinic early within the first eight weeks to allow early detection of complications and timely care.
