Woods’ Masters Tease: “I’m Trying”

Tiger Woods Eyes Comeback Amidst Tour Commitments and Physical Hurdles

Despite navigating a significant birthday milestone and enduring a series of challenging physical setbacks that have drastically reduced his tournament appearances, golf legend Tiger Woods remains optimistic about his playing future. Speaking ahead of the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club, the 50-year-old icon has not entirely ruled out a return to the hallowed grounds of Augusta National for the 2026 Masters, signalling a tenacious spirit that continues to define his career.

“I’m trying. Put it that way,” Woods stated, acknowledging the realities of his physical condition. He detailed the ongoing battle with his body, noting, “The disc replacement has been one thing. It’s been a challenge to – I’ve had a fused back and now a disc replacement, so it’s challenging.” The recent entry into a new decade also brings a different perspective, with Woods contemplating the possibility of utilising a cart, a concession he’s unwilling to make on the PGA Tour but sees as a viable option for the Champions Tour. “That’s something that, as I said, I won’t do out here (in PGA Tour events) because I don’t believe in it. But on the Champions Tour, that’s certainly (an) opportunity.”

However, Woods’ schedule is far from empty, even away from competitive play. He is deeply immersed in shaping the future of the PGA Tour as the chair of the new Future Competitions Committee. This influential role sees him heavily involved in a strategic overhaul of the tour, with significant changes anticipated as early as the 2027 season and a full implementation targeted for 2028.

Beyond his administrative duties, Woods’ leadership qualities are being sought in other high-profile capacities. He recently revealed he has been approached about his interest in captaining the United States team for the 2027 Ryder Cup. “They have asked me for my input on it, and I haven’t made my decision yet,” he commented, highlighting the complexity of balancing his tour responsibilities with such a significant commitment. “I’m trying to figure out what we’re trying to do with our tour.” The prospect of Ryder Cup captaincy is clearly a demanding one, consuming considerable time and thought. “(The Ryder Cup captaincy) has been driving me hours upon hours every day and trying to figure out if I can actually do our team, our Team USA and our players and everyone that’s going to be involved in the Ryder Cup, if I can do it justice with my time.” The 2027 Ryder Cup is slated to be held at Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland, following Europe’s decisive victory in the previous event held in New York in 2025.

This week, Woods’ primary focus shifts to his role as host of the Genesis Invitational. Riviera Country Club holds a special place in his history, having hosted his very first PGA Tour event in 1992 as a 16-year-old on a sponsor’s exemption. While he won’t be competing this week, his presence as tournament host underscores his enduring connection to the sport and the venue.

When questioned about the possibility of participating in the Masters, Woods offered a straightforward, albeit brief, response: “No,” indicating that the iconic major championship is not out of the question. The 15-time major champion’s journey since his memorable fifth Masters victory in 2019 has been marked by significant challenges. He has struggled to replicate that form in subsequent majors, missing the cut in several and withdrawing from others due to injury. His physical limitations stemming from a severe leg injury sustained in a 2021 car crash, compounded by an Achilles injury and recent back surgery, have undeniably impacted his ability to compete consistently at the highest level.

The prospect of competing on the Champions Tour, a circuit that permits the use of golf carts, presents a realistic avenue for Woods to continue his playing career, especially now that he has reached the age of 50. This adjustment acknowledges the physical realities he faces while still allowing him to engage with the game he loves on a competitive stage. His dedication to the sport, evident in his current administrative roles and his contemplation of future captaincies, speaks volumes about his unwavering passion and commitment to golf’s evolution.
