World Cup Bound: Three New Socceroos Called Up for Final Home Friendlies

Socceroos Squad Announced Amidst Player Defections and New Faces

The Australian national football team, the Socceroos, are gearing up for crucial international friendlies against Cameroon and Curaçao, with a 26-player squad unveiled by head coach Tony Popovic. The selection process has been marked by both significant omissions and the inclusion of promising new talent, including one player who has never set foot in Australia.

Among the notable absences is Adrian Segečić, last season’s A-League Men golden boot winner, who has opted to represent Croatia. Popovic expressed his efforts to retain the young talent, stating he did “all he could” to convince Segečić to play for the Socceroos. However, he maintains a firm stance against “selling the shirt” or making promises to secure a player’s commitment.

“If you’re getting called up for Australia through the junior levels, then you get called up by the Socceroos, shouldn’t that be enough that you’re wanted?” Popovic questioned. “Should I promise a player at 20 or 21 that he has to play? We’ve got young players in this squad now. Do I promise them that they’re going to play, and if they don’t, I have to fear that he will leave?”

Popovic added that Segečić’s decision might ultimately be for the best, preventing any potential future restrictions on his career aspirations. “It’s probably better for Adrian that he’s gone because I now haven’t restricted him from going maybe where he really wants to be,” he explained. While not ruling out a future return for Segečić if things don’t pan out with Croatia, Popovic wished the young player well for his adopted country.

New Strikers Emerge as Injury Concerns Linger

The upcoming fixtures also present an opportunity for new attacking talent to make their mark, particularly with the absence of injured striker Mo Toure, who has been a standout performer for Norwich in England’s Championship. Taking their place are uncapped forwards Ante Šuto and Deni Jurić.

Šuto, a 25-year-old striker for Hibernian in Scotland, was born and raised in Croatia but qualifies to play for Australia through his father. This will be his first visit to the country. “It’s a nice surrounding to come for your first time,” Popovic commented during a press conference held against the backdrop of the Sydney Opera House. “But it’ll be something very new for him, but I’m sure very exciting as well.”

Jurić, another uncapped player, was previously part of the Socceroos camp last November but had to withdraw due to injury. His inclusion now provides a chance to impress Popovic ahead of future international tournaments.

Final Preparations for World Cup Aspirants

These friendlies represent one of the final chances for players to stake their claim for a World Cup spot. The Socceroos will face Cameroon in Sydney on Friday, March 27th, followed by a match against Curaçao in Melbourne on the subsequent Tuesday.

The inclusion of Curaçao is particularly noteworthy, as they represent the smallest nation to ever qualify for the World Cup finals, making their presence a compelling pre-tournament spectacle.

Path to the World Cup: California Camp and Pre-Tournament Fixtures

Prior to the World Cup, a larger squad will convene in California for a training camp. From this group, Popovic will select his final 26-player squad for the tournament. The Socceroos are scheduled to play Mexico and another opponent yet to be confirmed in their final warm-up matches before the main event.

“If you look at the squad, there are places up for grabs because, you can tell by the new faces that are here, we’re always leaving the door open for any player,” Popovic emphasised, highlighting the competitive nature of selection.

Australia’s World Cup campaign kicks off on June 13th against a winner from a Uefa playoff. They will then face the USA in Seattle on June 19th, concluding their group stage matches against Paraguay in Santa Clara, near San Francisco, on June 25th.
