Yazoo County Teacher Honored with Alyce Clarke Award

A Teacher’s Journey and the Recognition She Deserves

Lauren Saxton, an algebra teacher at Yazoo County High School, was recently honored with the Alyce Clarke Award. This prestigious recognition celebrates her dedication to education and the positive impact she has on her students.

Saxton expressed that she was “shocked but grateful” for receiving this award. Her commitment to teaching and her students is evident in every aspect of her work. For the past three years, she has been teaching Algebra 1 at Yazoo County High School, which is just a part of her 12-year career in education.

Student Qaida Wright, who has had the opportunity to learn from Saxton both in elementary school and high school, described her as a “wizard” for her ability to make algebra seem easy. Wright shared how Saxton helped her improve in math, even though she struggled initially.

“I learned a lot from her, and she really helped me when it came to my math because I really wasn’t a good student at math, but she really helped me,” Wright said.

Saxton’s passion for teaching began early in life while growing up in Flora, where she worked in daycare and tutored students. She found her calling in helping others understand math.

“I was tutoring early in life, and it was always math,” Saxton said. “I could see that I could make a difference then, and I love doing it.”

While her love for numbers is significant, it is her love for her students that truly drives her. Jamie Johnson, a 10th grader, shared how Saxton provides constant reassurance and support, especially during tests.

“When taking tests, I get really bad anxiety, and Ms. Saxton’s like, ‘Just breathe, it’s just a test, it’s OK,'” Johnson said.

“She helps you be confident in yourself. She’s just a really good person,” Wright added.

Saxton emphasized that her students’ success is her greatest reward. She believes that her purpose is to support and uplift her students every day.

“I don’t come for me. I show up for them every day. It just means a lot to me,” Saxton said.

Beyond the classroom, Saxton is also actively involved in other areas of school life. She serves as the assistant coach for the high school’s softball team and archery club, further demonstrating her commitment to her students’ overall development.

The Impact of a Dedicated Educator

Lauren Saxton’s journey as an educator is a testament to her dedication and passion. From her early experiences in tutoring to her current role as a high school teacher, she has consistently shown a deep care for her students. Her ability to connect with them and make complex subjects like algebra more approachable has made a lasting impact on their lives.

Through her teaching, Saxton not only imparts knowledge but also instills confidence and a sense of self-worth in her students. Her presence in the classroom and beyond is a source of inspiration for many.

Her recognition with the Alyce Clarke Award is well-deserved, highlighting the importance of educators who go above and beyond to support their students. Saxton’s story is a reminder of the profound influence a single teacher can have on the lives of many.

As she continues her work in education, Saxton remains focused on her students’ growth and success. Her dedication serves as a model for others in the field, showing that true teaching goes beyond the curriculum and into the hearts and minds of those being taught.
