Abhishek Sharma’s World Cup Woes: Battling Form and Fitness Ahead of Crucial Clash
The 2026 T20 World Cup has presented a challenging start for Sunrisers Hyderabad’s dynamic opening duo. While Travis Head has already seen his tournament cut short following Australia’s early exit, Abhishek Sharma has been fighting to keep his team’s hopes alive. His aggressive presence at the top of the order has historically instilled fear in opposition bowlers, but a recent bout of illness and a string of low scores have visibly impacted his confidence.
Sharma’s recent form has been a stark contrast to his usual explosive displays. Despite the immense pressure of the World Cup, a persistent stomach bug has seen him register three ducks in the three matches he’s played so far. This has undoubtedly taken a toll, and his body language during a recent training session spoke volumes.
A Glimpse into the Training Ground
Following a day off, the Indian team convened for their first training session in preparation for a crucial Super Eight clash. The session kicked off at 5:30 pm under the imposing lights of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on February 20th. Jasprit Bumrah, a local hero, arrived slightly late but proceeded with his customary rigorous practice. However, Abhishek Sharma’s demeanour stood out amidst the focused intensity of his teammates.
A report from The Times of India detailed Sharma’s delayed entry into the nets. He only got his chance to bat after the designated batsmen had completed their sessions. Adding to the unusual preparation, Sharma undertook a full bowling session before stepping up to the crease.
Battling Doubts: Focus on Sixes, Lacking Confidence
Once at the crease, Sharma appeared to be struggling to find his rhythm. The report suggested that his focus was primarily on hitting sixes, a hallmark of his aggressive style. However, this aggressive intent seemed to be overshadowed by a noticeable lack of confidence.
Coaching Support and Team Unity
Before the nets session commenced, head coach Gautam Gambhir engaged in an extended, animated discussion with the left-handed batsman. The interaction concluded with a supportive fist bump, signalling the management’s unwavering backing for Sharma.
Despite this encouragement, Sharma’s batting during the 20-minute net session was not as fluid or clean as his fans have come to expect. All eyes were on him, with coaches and captain Suryakumar Yadav, along with the rest of the squad, observing his every shot.
Bowling Coach’s Public Endorsement
Later in the day, bowling coach Morne Morkel offered public support for Abhishek Sharma during a press conference. He acknowledged Sharma’s current struggles but expressed confidence in his ability to bounce back.
“Abhishek is a world-class player,” Morkel stated. “Luckily, there were other guys standing up while Abhishek obviously wasn’t scoring the runs he would like. But we’re going through a very important phase of the World Cup now, and I’m pretty sure he’s going to deliver. Not just for the team, but also for all the viewers watching the game, because he’s entertaining and we love to see that. So, yeah, I’m pretty sure [he’ll turn it around]; he’s hitting the ball well in the nets. It’s just a matter of getting that start and getting his innings going.”
While Sharma did manage to connect with some clean shots later in his net session, his overall body language upon leaving the nets did not exude the confidence of a player ready to dominate. With India set to face South Africa on February 22nd, all eyes will undoubtedly be on Abhishek Sharma, hoping for a significant comeback performance.
