Afridi Fires Back at Shadab’s World Cup Taunt: “Perform on the Field, Then We’ll Talk”
Tensions have flared in the Pakistani cricket fraternity following comments made by current all-rounder Shadab Khan regarding the team’s historical struggles against India in World Cups. The remarks, made after a dominant victory against Namibia in the T20 World Cup, have drawn a sharp rebuke from former captain Shahid Afridi, who has urged Shadab to let his performance do the talking.
The controversy ignited after Pakistan’s recent loss to India in the T20 World Cup. In the aftermath, Afridi and fellow former player Mohammad Yousuf suggested that established players like Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Shadab Khan might need to be replaced by a younger, more dynamic crop. However, Pakistan quickly bounced back, with Salman Ali Agha leading the charge to a commanding 102-run victory over Namibia, securing their passage to the Super 8 stage.
Shadab Khan himself played a pivotal role in this resurgence, delivering a stellar all-round performance with both bat and ball, scoring 35 runs and claiming three wickets. Despite his crucial contribution, his comments at the post-match press conference have ruffled feathers, prompting criticism from several prominent former cricketers.
Shadab had pointed out that while he was part of the squad that achieved Pakistan’s maiden World Cup victory over India in the 2021 T20 World Cup in Dubai, past generations of Pakistani players had fallen short against their arch-rivals on the global stage.
Shahid Afridi, in a candid interview, acknowledged Shadab’s point about the historical record but cautioned against complacency. “Shadab was right when he mentioned that we never beat India in World Cups, but his team did,” Afridi stated on Samaa TV. “They earned respect after that victory, but they couldn’t manage the pressure that came with it.”
Afridi elaborated on the concept of pressure, suggesting that the weight of expectation following such a monumental win can be a double-edged sword. He implied that the team struggled to navigate the internal dynamics and pressures that arose after their historic triumph.
“By respect, I mean that after their win over India, they struggled to handle the internal issues,” Afridi continued. “Shadab should also remember that when he wasn’t performing, we backed him on national television, calling him the backbone of the team.” This highlights a perceived inconsistency in Shadab’s current stance, given the support he received from former players during leaner periods.
Afridi, known for his fiery on-field presence and straightforward communication, emphasized the importance of backing up words with actions. “I know Shadab, and he’s a great guy. He’s always shown respect towards us,” Afridi said. “During our playing days, when people spoke about us, we backed up our words with actions on the field. It wasn’t just against the smaller teams; we delivered performances against the bigger teams as well.”
The former captain then issued a direct challenge to the young all-rounder, urging him to channel his energy into delivering impactful performances, particularly in the upcoming crucial Super 8 matches against formidable opponents like New Zealand, England, and Sri Lanka.
“So Shadab beta, aap bhi performance kariye. Beta performances karo,” Afridi advised, directly addressing Shadab in Urdu. “We supported you during your tough times when you didn’t even play domestic cricket. If you want to respond to us, do it by showing your skills on the field. Perform, and once the World Cup is over, we will stop talking.”
This exchange underscores the ongoing debate within Pakistani cricket circles about player accountability, the pressure of international competition, and the role of former players in mentoring and critiquing the current generation. As Pakistan gears up for the challenging Super 8 phase, the focus will undoubtedly be on whether Shadab Khan and his teammates can heed Afridi’s advice and let their performances on the pitch provide the most compelling response.
The pressure is now squarely on the shoulders of the current squad to prove their mettle against the world’s best, and the veteran voices will be watching closely, waiting for tangible results to silence any doubts.
