Arteta Unpacks Eze’s Sub: Arsenal Held at Brentford

Arteta Explains Eze Substitution as Arsenal Draw at Brentford

Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, has shed light on the decision to substitute Eberechi Eze at halftime during the Gunners’ recent 1-1 draw against Brentford. The England international’s performance was underwhelming, contributing to a generally lacklustre attacking display from Arsenal in the first 45 minutes, where they managed only a single shot on target.

Eze was replaced by captain Martin Ødegaard at the break, a tactical shift that appeared to invigorate Arsenal’s second-half performance. Despite the improvement, Brentford managed to take the lead through Noni Madueke’s opener, which was later cancelled out by Keane Lewis-Potter for the home side. This result meant Arsenal could only extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to four points, with Manchester City maintaining pressure in close pursuit.

Arteta acknowledged the necessity of making a change at halftime to alter the team’s dynamic. He explained his reasoning:

“Because with the way that they were pressing,” Arteta stated. “I think we needed another kind of profile to generate many more problems for them around those areas and I think [Odegaard] came on in the pitch really well and the team had another gear and more threat to arrive to the areas that we wanted to do and that’s the decision.”

The substitution marked a continuation of Eze’s struggles since his impressive hat-trick against Tottenham in the north London derby back in November. He is yet to score or register an assist in the Premier League since that outing. This recent match was his first Premier League start since mid-December, and he has found opportunities limited in recent weeks.

Arteta offered some perspective on Eze’s current form and the challenges of adapting to a new club and a specific playing environment:

“Well I think he had moments and it’s not easy when you move to a new club, it’s always like this and when you play against a team that is like this,” Arteta commented. “The ball is a lot of times not on the floor and you have to be constantly breaking the play and do that, especially for attacking and creative players, it’s more difficult.”

A Frantic Finish and Brentford’s Aerial Threat

The closing stages of the match were particularly tense, with Arsenal potentially having secured a victory. Cristhian Mosquera made a crucial intervention to stop Igor Thiago in stoppage time, just before the Brentford striker blazed over an opportunity when through on goal. Moments later, Gabriel Martinelli had a chance to win it for Arsenal, only to be thwarted by a save from Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher in a frantic conclusion.

Brentford posed a persistent threat throughout the game, particularly from set-pieces like corners and long throws. Arteta highlighted the unpredictable nature of facing such a team:

“We scored the goal and the game was under total control.

“But against them, that’s not enough because they just need somebody making a foul that is unnecessary, a ball in the channel, they push you, the clearance is not good, a throw-in, and then you have to pray because they are exceptional at what they do.

“The chaos that is in, and around that ball is very, very difficult to defend. We said to the players: ‘If you want to win here, you’re going to have to defend the box with your life’. We didn’t do that on one of the actions, but they deserve credit, too.”

The draw at Brentford underscores the challenges Arsenal face in maintaining their grip on the Premier League title. While they demonstrated resilience and an improved second-half performance, the inability to convert chances and defend set-pieces effectively proved costly. The team will need to address these areas as they navigate the crucial latter stages of the season.
