Chris Waddle Suggests Arsenal Should Replace Leandro Trossard
Chris Waddle, a former England midfielder, believes it’s the right time for Arsenal to look for a new winger on the left side of the pitch. He has specifically highlighted Anthony Gordon, a player currently linked with Bayern Munich, as a potential target for manager Mikel Arteta.
Trossard has been one of the most valuable signings in Arteta’s tenure since he joined from Brighton for £27 million in January 2023. Despite being linked with a move last summer, the Belgian international remained at the Emirates Stadium and played a crucial role in Arsenal’s title-winning campaign. His goal against West Ham in the closing stages of the season was particularly significant.
Trossard is still under contract for another season and expressed his intention to stay at Arsenal until the end of his deal. “I still have one year on my contract, and hopefully, first we win the Champions League,” he said. “Then I think next season can be another very nice season.”
However, Waddle believes that despite Trossard’s contributions, the club needs to upgrade their options on the left wing. “I think they need to be looking at another winger on the left-hand side because Leandro Trossard isn’t really a winger,” Waddle told Boyle Sports. “He’s been converted into one. Trossard has done well. I’m not saying he hasn’t. He’s a dangerous player but I don’t think he’s a good enough winger.”
Waddle suggested that Arsenal should consider players like Anthony Gordon or Jarrod Bowen as potential replacements for Trossard. “Somebody like Anthony Gordon would be a good acquisition or maybe even Jarrod Bowen,” he added. “He would be a player who could play in this Arsenal team. I know he likes to play down the right and that’s where Bukayo Saka is, but he could do a job down the left and he’d get you goals and work hard for the team.”
Gordon appears set to leave Newcastle United this summer as the Magpies look to raise funds, with Bayern Munich among the clubs interested in the England international. Meanwhile, there is speculation about Jarrod Bowen’s future at West Ham following their relegation from the Premier League.
Speaking about his future on Sunday, Bowen said: “Listen, it’s still very, very raw. Talking about futures is disrespectful to the club, the fans, everything like that. This club deserves to be in the Premier League. That’s our aim now, this season is done, our aim now is to get back in the Premier League. That’s as simple as it is. I want this club to be in the Premier League. It’s a club that means so much to me, that’s given me so much, so my vision is getting this club back in the Premier League.”

Potential Replacements for Trossard
Waddle emphasized the importance of finding a winger who can provide both creativity and goal-scoring ability. He believes that players like Gordon and Bowen could fill this role effectively.
“Anthony Gordon is a player who could fit well into the Arsenal system,” Waddle explained. “He’s known for his pace and technical skills, which could complement the existing attacking options. While he prefers playing on the right, he has the versatility to operate on the left as well.”
Bowen, on the other hand, has shown his value in the Premier League, and Waddle sees him as a potential alternative if Gordon is not available. “Jarrod Bowen is a proven performer in the top flight,” Waddle said. “His experience and understanding of the game make him a strong candidate for the role.”

The Future of Trossard and Arsenal’s Strategy
Despite Waddle’s suggestions, Trossard remains an important part of Arsenal’s squad. His performances this season have been inconsistent, with only six league goals in 31 appearances. However, his contribution to the team’s success in the previous season cannot be overlooked.
Arteta will need to carefully evaluate whether to replace Trossard or continue developing him as a key player. The decision may depend on several factors, including the availability of suitable replacements and the overall strategy for the upcoming season.
As the transfer window approaches, Arsenal’s interest in players like Gordon and Bowen could shape the direction of the club’s attack. With the Champions League title still within reach, Arteta will be keen to strengthen his squad in all areas, ensuring that Arsenal remains competitive on multiple fronts.
