Arzani Ready for Victory Boos: “I Embrace It”

Arzani Ready to Face the Boos as Derby Showdown Looms

Daniel Arzani is no stranger to the roar of the crowd, but this Saturday night, he anticipates a different kind of reception as he prepares to face his former club, Melbourne Victory, for the first time since his return to the A-League Men. Now on loan at his boyhood club and fierce rivals, Melbourne City, from Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros, Arzani is bracing himself for the inevitable jeers from the Victory faithful at AAMI Park.

However, far from being daunted, Arzani claims to embrace the animosity. “I embrace it,” he told AAP, referencing the online backlash he’s already copped. “They’ve already been coming for me for a couple of weeks now on Instagram. To be fair, I’ve been copping a fair bit of abuse, but I think it’s part of the game. It’s to be expected.” He maintains a pragmatic outlook, adding, “I don’t take it to heart. It’s part of the game. I can also understand why they’re a little bit upset, but no, I don’t mind it.”

The excitement for Arzani stems from the significance of the occasion rather than any lingering resentment. “I’m excited, to be completely honest with you – not because there’s any bad blood or there’s anything to prove, but just because it’s obviously a big occasion. It’s a big game. It’s an important one. It’s huge for the club.” He also looks forward to the competitive spirit of a derby. “And also, more than anything, it’s nice going out and having some rivalry against some old mates, and go out there and (have) a little bit of shithousery. It’ll be fun. I think it’ll be a good night.”

Arzani’s move to City in January was a strategic decision following a “super-frustrating” period at Ferencvaros. Limited game time at the Hungarian club, where the tactical setup didn’t favour conventional wingers, prompted the switch. “The best option for me, especially with it being a World Cup year, was to kind of take a bit less of a risk and to come back and try to get as much game time as possible,” he explained.

Adding to his challenges, Arzani underwent surgery to address an irritated meniscus, a lingering issue from the ACL tear he sustained in 2018. This injury occurred during a training incident while he was in Hungary, and he is still in the process of rebuilding his match fitness.

World Cup Dream Fuels Arzani’s Drive

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, Arzani is acutely aware that consistent form and regular game time are paramount to securing a spot in the Socceroos squad. He enjoys a strong rapport with Socceroos boss Tony Popovic and understands the selection criteria. “With the national team, it’s been made very clear that it’s going to be picked based off of form and minutes and consistency. So I’m just trying to find that as soon as I can,” he stated.

His ambition is clear: to return to the pinnacle of international football. “I need to play good football, some of my best football, and I need to do it consistently. The game time is the bare minimum. I need to be on the stage and to be able to show myself, but then when I’m there, I need to be performing at a very high level or I’ve got no chance.”

Arzani, now 27, burst onto the scene as Australia’s exciting young talent at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. His hopes for the Qatar tournament were dashed, but he is now resolutely focused on making a comeback to the global showpiece. “There’s not many people that have an opportunity to play in one, let alone two,” he reflected. “I was so young the first one, and I didn’t really fully understand the weight and I didn’t understand the occasion properly. And I think this time, if I go, I’ll be a lot more grateful and a lot more understanding of where I am and how much of a privileged position it is.”

Key Factors for Arzani’s Resurgence:

  • Consistent Game Time: Securing regular minutes on the pitch is crucial for Arzani to rediscover his rhythm and form.
  • Peak Performance: Simply playing isn’t enough; Arzani needs to consistently deliver high-level performances to catch the eye of national selectors.
  • Physical Fitness: Overcoming the lingering effects of past injuries and building robust fitness levels will be essential for sustained success.
  • Mental Fortitude: Embracing challenges, such as facing hostile crowds, and maintaining a positive mindset are vital for his comeback.

The upcoming derby against Melbourne Victory presents Arzani with a significant opportunity to showcase his talent and resilience. As he steps onto the AAMI Park turf, he will carry the weight of expectation from his new club and the burning desire to prove his worth on the road to the World Cup, all while navigating the fervent atmosphere of one of Australian football’s most intense rivalries.
