As the highly anticipated clash between India and Pakistan on February 15th looms, a clever tactic has emerged from the mind of former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, aimed at nullifying Pakistan’s potent mystery spinner, Usman Tariq. Ashwin’s suggestion, shared on his YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat,’ has ignited considerable discussion among cricket enthusiasts, with Tariq widely considered Pakistan’s most significant spin threat in the tournament.
Ashwin proposed a strategy that he firmly believes is “completely within the rules” and could disrupt the Indian batsmen’s approach to Tariq’s distinctive pre-delivery pause. He articulated his idea: “There is one thing I want to see. Who dares to do that? If Tariq pauses before delivery, the batter has the right to move away. The batter can say, ‘I don’t know when the ball is coming, so I moved away.'”
He elaborated on the potential ramifications of such a move: “That will be an interesting case and a huge headache for the umpire. The umpire will have to decide whether to warn the bowler or the batter. Odds are, and that is how cricket has worked, the bowler will be warned first.”
Ashwin’s reasoning suggests that a batsman preemptively stepping out of their crease could effectively throw Tariq off his rhythm, thereby amplifying the pressure on him during this crucial group-stage encounter.
“Imagine, this is such a big game,” Ashwin continued. “And Tariq has been the cynosure. He has to bowl 24 deliveries like that. If the batter starts withdrawing, imagine the pressure on Tariq. He might have to alter his action in the middle of the game. Pakistan’s trump card might turn out to be nothing.”
The Scrutiny of Usman Tariq’s Bowling Action
Usman Tariq’s bowling action has been a subject of debate even before the T20 World Cup commenced. His unconventional off-spin style has drawn comparisons to the legendary Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan, primarily due to Tariq possessing a hypermobile – or double-jointed – elbow that limits his ability to fully straighten his arm.
However, it’s his unusual rhythm that poses the greatest challenge to batsmen. His distinctive diagonal run-up, coupled with a noticeable pause at the crease, creates a stop-start action that can significantly disrupt a batter’s timing and force them to reconsider their shot selection.
During a recent bilateral series in Pakistan against Australia, Cameron Green was among the players who voiced concerns regarding the legality of Tariq’s bowling action.
Despite these queries, Ashwin himself has previously stepped in to defend the young spinner, asserting that his action adheres to the laws of the game. He explained: “If I have a normal bowling action but suddenly pause and deliver the final ball in the over, that was ruled illegal a few years ago because that is against the natural rhythm of my bowling action. The umpire can warn me. For Tariq, the case is different. That pause is part of his normal action.”
The Threat Usman Tariq Poses to India
While India has kicked off their T20 World Cup title defence with consecutive victories, their vulnerability against spin bowling has become increasingly evident. Suryakumar Yadav’s team has witnessed the fall of three wickets to USA’s spinners and a further five to Namibia’s, with periods of their batting appearing tense rather than fluid.
This is precisely where Usman Tariq emerges as Pakistan’s most significant threat. He is more than just a spinner; he is a master of disrupting rhythm. His diagonal approach and prolonged pause at the crease have the ability to unsettle batsmen even before the ball leaves his hand.
Once he finds his rhythm, however, he can be a formidable opponent. Tariq possesses sharp carrom balls, bowls with good pace, and employs subtle arm variations that frequently leave batsmen in a state of confusion.
Currently, Tariq is in impressive wicket-taking form, having claimed three wickets in Pakistan’s second match against the USA after being rested for their opening game against the Netherlands.
Considering the Colombo pitch is expected to offer more grip as the match progresses, Tariq’s peculiar bowling style could very well prove to be India’s biggest concern and Pakistan’s greatest asset on February 15th.
